What's the best and most secure way of installing Wordpress, within the root or subdirectory?

Is it possible to install in in the subdirectory, and then have the blog content show as if it were installed in root?

As in security it wouldn't matter.

You can do what you said but probably not with shared hosting. You would have to change the default path in a file most people dont have access to unless they own their own server.

Can't remember off the top of my head for sure but I think its the vhost.conf file.

My free PSD logs can be downloaded at PSD Bum. Enjoy!

You can stick a .htaccess file with a password
if you need some extra safety in the wp-admin folder.

Hi! From a security perspective it doesn't really matter if you install in root or a subdir.

But you can install it in a subdir and then have it shown as in root, no problem. You just have to change the settings for "WordPress Adress" (where the files are installed) and "Blog adress" (Where your index.php and .htaccess goes) under General Settings. See the attached pic. You also need to do some additional steps. See this link: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_Wo..._Own_Directory

Those steps are for moving an install from root to a subfolder while keeping the blog adress as root.

    Hope it helped!

But as far as keeping everything neat, do you guys recommend installing it in subdirectory?

      Only on subdomains.

      Common problem with subfolders is:

      domain.com/subfolder/ or www.domain.com/subfolder/

You suddenly get 2 different URLs... :p

In my opinion.. naw, not really. Only if you are going to have other stuff installed in root beside wordpress. For a straight wp based site, install in root. It's easier in the long run.
