Personal Branding Yourself - 2010 IM Tactic

Personal Branding was very popular in 2009 and will continue in 2010. Establish yourself with a high traffic blog, social media and video marketing is excellent way to become successful with Internet Marketing.

This isn't for everyone, you have to become transparent and be willing to take a role as a leader in your industry. Look at some of the Internet Celebrities who branded themselves, like Perry Belcher and Gary Vee to name a few.

I feel that hiding behind a computer screen and having a avatar as your profile pic hurt your sales. There is plenty of room at the top, brand yourself :-)

This is true and it's been going on for years. It's how guys like Rand and Shoemoney (IMO the two guys who are the kings of this) do it. Look at SEOMoz. They have a ton of business because Rand does such a great job giving away information on SEO.

I seriously doubt I'll ever sell an ebook, go for affiliate commissions or try to make serious money on my own, but I spend so much free time on personal branding because I switched over to consulting a good 6 or 7 years ago and my name is a brand that is going to be checked out throughout my career no matter what.

Branding is waaayyyyy more than just these things. You're on the right track with this and with the ever decreasing cost of audio/video (anyone say Amazon S3 hosting???)

Every action you take is branding yourself something. The way you appear on everything brands you. How many emails, what the emails say, how long they are, what you give and ask for, etc all brand you.

This is why it's so important to be a nice person, personable, yet be someone who holds someone accountable. Everyone needs tough love but you have to balance it.

I just feel like branding is way more about the soft stuff than the actual tactics (video, audio, social media, etc.)

It's waayyyyy bigger and probably one of the 2 or 3 dominant themes in all businesses.

    Cheers,

    Brad

Branding ? I heard this on late night radio and wrote it down, I did not get the site name but credit to the site for the info

    3 B's in Business

    1. Branding - who are you and what do you do / your company stand for ?
    2. With the branding comes belief in your company
    3. With that belief comes business / sales

seemed worth writing down at the time, simple stuff i suppose

Branding is different then just using tools.

for instance there are some well known brands that produce crap. yet the continue in business year after year after year. simply because they branded themselves. take a look at a well known pizza joint. they have minimal toppings for big dollars in comparison . yet the continue year after year after year in business . see it is all about appearance not just about tools. you can use the tools to shape your appearance but in the end it is creating that perceived value of your brand.

If for instance you begin a business with a slogan like nobody better then me. those words are not your brand it is your grabber not a very good one but none the less it is one. a tag line is often associated with a logo which is your brand. Now the reputation of your brand is far different then just getting your brand out there but that is not what we are talking about the reputation is where the end user expresses their perceved value of your brand like oh you bought a ___ what a piece of crap . or WOW you got a ___ I always wanted one of those. It is all about giving quality to the end user and having that quality associated with your brand. that is my definition of proper branding
      school is out

P.S. Big Mike has done very well with his partners in building a successful brand the proof is in the value perceived by the end user a recent post in this forum proves that. well done Mike!

I often wonder why personal branding (or should that be personality branding?) works so well in IM.

Is it because of the empathy factor?
"Hey, I'm just a normal guy like you" for example?

      Yes...simple reason.

People buy/pay attention to those they like.

If they don't like you they unsubscribe...good for you (only dealing with fans) and good for them (they don't have to see you anymore).

The reality is...everything you do makes your brand...that's why you push the limits b/c most people are too damn timid to take a stand on anything.

Be the person that people like...but also be doing stuff in a "revolutionary enough" way to have people unsubscribe...it keeps you fresh, accountable, and also forces people to take a personal stand (which even if they don't realize it...is good for them too)

Win Win situation in my book

      Cheers,

      Brad

That is part of it. I think that many people are put off by these landing pages with money flying out of the computer. They want a live person or call center that will be there to support them. When I sell my Internet Products that range from $400 to $20,000, I am there to answer the phone and have a real conversation with them.

Branding oneself is probably a very good way to be successful,
but I prefer the 'Mr. X. hidden behind the computer' style

Among the most passionate cheerleaders for the branding idea
are the network marketing people. The problem is when you
don't have your own products/services that are unique,
your brand tends to be undermined by the fact that with
MLM and other similar distribution models at the end of
the day you don't control the product, you're down the
food-chain, in sales. The most effective branding is hinged
on some form of exclusivity - which is a problem when
others are promoting the identical product.

Branding IS very important. Have something that makes you different from everyone else. Be "the". The most expensive, the cheapest, the fastest, etc...excel at something and use that for branding!

Sounds like a good branding plan.

Here's something you might want to add: list-building.

A very good book on branding on the Internet is Gary Vaynerchuk's "Crush It"...a book that goes into detail on how he established his brand on Twitter, Youtube, etc...basically how he went from nobody to the Net's leading wine expert in a couple years.

      Excellent read.

Excellent example of Self Branding, you just have to be ready for the attention. It's not for everyone. I contribute to the Internet Marketing Training in my company, had about 100 people come up wanting me meet and thank me...even got a few drinks bought for me.haha
With YouTube, Twitter and Facebook you it has made self branding easier. Before it was the media that made people famous. Now you can become a celebrity in your own niche...

My macaw is my branding logo. He looks better than I do and has a more outgoing personality.

But, you don't have to be popular to make money. In fact, I think you're more likely to make more money if you pursue fortune over fame.

It is very important to brand yourself in business and especially in Internet marketing. We're all taught that the money is in our "relationship" with our lists. Branding helps in this. Build a persona that people can relate to and your on your way to a successful business. Transparency is what will separate you from the pack.

    I agree with Brad.

I honestly think that if you just do your best
every time an opportunity presents itself
    you'll be branding yourself..

Just provide the best value you can to the most
people you can reach and branding will take
    care of itself..

    All the best,

    Omar

I often hear of the personality branding and to be honest I don't think it is that big of a thing. I think have your name associated with Integrity, Quality, And Stability is the best form of personal branding there is .

I mean I can be personable but I am not a jay leno or some one like that. they use their personality and writers to gain popularity. even though Busines can be a popularity contest You would be surprised at how websites with extremely poor design yechy backgrounds etc make huge dollars. it is all a matter of how the product is presented the quality of that product and the name you make for yourself.
If your not trustworthy your nothing if you are slowly but surely you will build a loyal customer base and the word of mouth syndrome will work in your favor.

Branding goes so much deeper then just a few ads or lines of text it takes time and effort to build a name and reputation people know and trust.

I personally think that branding is not based on likeability although that certainly plays a part it is not based on sex appeal but it helps. it is just completely an entire package that people will come to know and love or know and hate one or the other.
