Is there a good way to sell a website without paying listing fees?

I ask because I've noticed that all the websites I've seen have a upfront listing fee that are pretty high (compared to a site like ebay for example).

Now I don't think there is anything wrong charging a fee if the website sells, but it makes it a risky investment especially since sites like flippa.com for example are so incredibly saturated.

Any ideas?

You might try sitedeal.org - I think they are still free. Or DigitalPoint. but I think the ones that charge the fees are where all the buyers are and you will probably get a lot more for your site.

If your site is valuable, the fees are worth it because that's where the buyers are. If you don't want to invest in the listing fees, I recommend namepros.com and sitedeal.org. I think digitalPoint is the worst forum to buy or sell anything, but it's free.

I see what you're saying, but it's a bit intimidating for first time sellers for example.

Thanks for the suggestions though, I will take a look.. And yes.. I agree with your assessment of DP

I've sold a site for a very fair price on DP. Costs nothing to put it out there.

I've also been paid what I was asking for a niche site by approaching the owner of my favourite forum in that niche and asking if I could offer it for sale in the forum, figuring that the members may be interested. The forum owner bought it there and then for my asking price. Tried it with another site, the forum owner said it was fine to offer it for sale in their classifieds, but in the end I decided not to.

      Hello,

I've sold few sites (including blogspot blogs) on DP and yes it has no listing fee or any other fees.

But, the problem with DP is so many scammers are hanging there and more efforts required to find the real buyer.

I have no experience in flippa or other sites. But i heard many good buyers are there.

If you have sites earning money and have good traffic to be sold, you can PM me about it and i'll send the message to the buyers who bought my sites before.

      Thanks.

Search the freelance sites for buyers that are looking for your type of site.. I got many clients this way and sold sites for $thousands$... Do a search for projects posted with what type of site you have, for example if you have a freebie incentive site then put in the search box on these freelance sites "freebie incentive" and see what listings pull up ..

Find some with buyers then make a bid and send them a PM with full details of your site...

If you think your site is worth more than $200, you'd be better off with marketplaces like Flippa. The 'free' aspect of Digitalpoint and other such sites might be lucrative but seriously, there are very few buyers on those places.

There is nothing to be intimidated at ... Flippa is less than $30 with a couple of upgrades. And it's absolutely worth it!

If there were no listing fees, the site would be full of spam and low quality listings.

Buyers wouldn't go there because they would have to wade through too much trash.

Therefore, as a seller, you really want a site that has relatively high listing fees so you can draw in the most qualified buyers and so you don't get lost in a bunch of trash listings.

BTW, I have never had a listing on Flippa that didn't result in increased traffic that more than paid for the listing fee. That is even if the site doesn't sell.

That makes the listing fees free anyway.

I don't know why people always say Flippa is 'saturated'. Does it have a LOT of sites for sale? Yes! But it's a website marketplace, it's supposed to.

Ok, I do realize that people who say it's saturated are usually referring to the brand new, low-priced sites that have no traffic and no revenue. There are a ton of people copying each other and pumping out crap, but if you're not pumping out crap, then you don't have to worry about them. They're not your competition, they're crap-pumpers.

That's not saying you can't sell brand new sites. I do it all the time as do a couple other people in this thread.

If your site is priced right and doesn't suck, then it will sell and it's worth paying a listing fee to put it in front of thousands of buyers who want to buy what you have (you researched what people want to buy first, right? ).

The hours you'll spend trying to hunt down a free place to list your site would be better spent on building another site to sell! Your time is worth more than the $20 listing! Plus, there's probably a reason a listing is free, if you find one (DP as an example, but I actually like DP for buying lol)

Focus on creating something you are confident will sell before you think of listing it, and then choosing where to list it will be easy peasy.

    Cheeeers!

I have sold quite a few sites on DP for fair prices (using an Escrow company for the transaction), but it has been a while so I do not really know what the atmosphere is like there these days. I have also used Flippa, which is straightforward, works well, and is more than worth the listing fee if you are selling a quality site.

Listing fees on Flippa are set to try to encourage quality in the market. Quality start up sites do sell - I've bought one ore two myself! If your package has a niche domain name, well written original content, some backlinks and a nice template, you'll be well on the way to making your first sale.
