Decrease Bounce Rate??

My site has a high bounce rate... is there anything that warriors have done to decrease the bounce rate. I see that users are spending an average of 1:30 on the site, so they are not hitting a page an instantly bouncing back, they are reading the article but not clicking to another article. The site im referring to is Ck This Out | Ck This Out is a collection of "viral emails".

What is your bounce rate and what can I do to increase the CTR/ decrease bounce rate?

I'm doing 3-4 minutes with a 30% bounce rate on average.

Buying junk traffic increases your bounce rate.

    Being interesting lowers it.

So don't buy junk traffic and be more interesting.

I don't buy any traffic... I get 2500-3000 a month and growing but the bounce rate is 70%... that's HUGE, way tooooo high. I cant think why its soo high.

That would leave the "being more interesting" part!

That's an interesting response to how to be more interesting.

I think I would avoid using the services of forum spammers though.

First, make sure that you're tracking all pages.

I checked out your site. For me, I wasn't sure where I wanted to go. My suggestion would be to make the category headers stand out more. What I mean by category headers: for example, on your right side bar, you have a list of articles under the "Funny" category. I'd make that "Funny" more noticeable (like you do with your Just In on the left-hand side).

If it were me, I'd also test things by having two categories on the right-hand side (not just the Funny category), or test different categories in that spot.

Also, check out your competition. See what they're doing.

Just tossing out some ideas; hope it helps.

In my experience, a high CTR means a high bounce rate which means more money. A lower bounce rate means a lower CTR which means less money.

Also you have to consider the traffic sources as well. Social referral traffic, such as you would get from Digg and StumbleUpon, will bounce out very quickly. Search traffic will tend to stick around a little longer if your site is a match for what they're looking for. By posting your link on this forum, you probably just boosted your bounce rate since this traffic will probably jump out quickly too.

In other words, it's really not a stat that you need to be concerned about. In spite of all the ballyhoo about Google using it, it is virtually impossible for them to track it accurately due to the different ways users interact with sites, the visitor's unknowable purpose for visiting the site and if they block scripts and/or referrer information.

@bgmcaw: I do see what you're saying, but consider this: if it's a content site, having people move around your site will end up making you more money for a few reasons (in my opinion and from my experience). With Adsense, you can get paid by CPM, too, but, more importantly, you increase the likelihood of somebody coming back to your site, bookmarking your site, or sharing the content of your site with friends, if you keep it interesting and make them want to explore your site more. More interested traffic = more money.
