I'm new here and to the internet marketing world. Recently I have been looking at some keyword software and see that there are websites with 100's if not 1000's of keywords for there web page. Not the PPC keywords but organic search engine ones. I know you are supposed to optimise your web page for your keyword, but how do you do that with so many. How did they do that? Thanks for any help.

    We don't!

If I understand what you're asking, we don't optimize our sites for all those keywords. We optimize for just a few words or phrases.

I just checked one of my sites in one of the tools i use, and it shows 98 phrases that Google has me in the top 20 positions for. Except for the 3 phrases I've done on-page SEO for--those are in position 1--the other phrases are what people type in when they are doing a Google search.

If you have lots of content and make sure you use all the words that a searcher might use when looking for your product or info, and if Google likes you, your pages will show up in the results for the multitude of phrases different individuals will type into a Google search.

We have no control over what keywords Google searchers will use, but we can control what words we have on our sites.

Try to get as many LRI keywords on your page and you should be good!

It's not important that you use 100 or 1000 keywords for your articles. You don't need anywhere near that many. When doing keyword research, you need to focus on the keywords that will bring you the most traffic and if possible, the least competition.

But the most important thing is that you need to know up front what your chances are of ranking with a particular keyword phrase. If you're not able to rank, you're wasting your time.

One way to know if you can rank is to use the right keyword software, as they are not all created equal. Your keyword research software should, at a minimum
    1. Instantly pull up the top 10, 20 or 30 Google results
    2. Analyze multiple sets of keywords at the same time
    3. Tell you what anchor texts are being used in the links to each page
    4. Provide a keyword suggestion tool
    5. Show you the links to the ranking page and the home page
