What small group collaboration platform have you used?

I'm wondering what folks here might think about this.

There are ~100 people in a class and we want to split them into smaller mastermind groups of 5-8. We're looking for some kind of collaboration platform that will allow the following activities to take place:

* interactive chat periodically
* chat doesn't get erased daily, or it can be recorded and saved
* upload files to an area that's accessible to others in the group
* post comments like a forum

This needs to be restricted to just the members of each group. This is for a class and will only run for a month or two, so we want something that's free.

What would you recommend, based on your experience? (Please don't say, "Have you tried ______?" -- I'm asking because I have very little experience with group collaboration stuff. While I've posted documents and viewed documents to TONS of sites, I have not actually set anything up nor engaged in any "group collaboration" type activities. I'm asking for people to share their actual experiences and make recommendations based on them -- not what a simple search on Google will turn up.)

    When I posted this, it was all run together. I just edited it so it's more readable.

    Does Google wave let you isolate groups of people? I thought everything is visible to anybody you're connected to?
