Bumping heads with affiliates

9 replies
A question for affiliate managers, or other product creators;

How do you coincide your marketing initiatives with those of your affiliates to avoid bumping heads with them?

I don't want to be using the same words on PPC or otherwise advertising in the same place my affiliates might, IMHO, it would come off as unprofessional and lacking in how to operate my business effectively.

do you have certain initiatives that you mention are "off limits" to affiliates or just let the chips fall where they may?

what say you fellow Warriors?

    Generally I would say by the time you have affiliates, you could stop promoting yourself altogether. However if you need to keep promoting then just do it. You should have some idea of which sites your affiliates are sending traffic to you (google analytics) and see what they are doing. Then don't step on their toes!

            That is true. Well, I agree with the above post that once you have an affiliate section of your product you really don't need to worry about self promotion. If ANYTHING, why not concentrate on gaining more affiliates to increase profits?

              That's exactly what I'm going to do prior to and after launch. I am also going to scour the web looking for super affiliates as 1 of them is equal to about 100 regular affiliates and makes everything easier for both parties; they have less competition, and I have detailed levels of communication with them to ensure their complete and utter happiness.

              On a side note does anyone here know of people that put together affiliate tools pages? i.e mainly the graphics aspect, I can handle the keyword ideas, and other written sales tools.

                I think it would be silly to stop promoting after you have some affiliates. There is no chance I am leaving my product at the mercy of affiliates. IMO if an affiliate sees that you do promote then they know you have money in the bank. On a side note if I did promote heavily I would taper off a bit after I had some affiliates and measured the success.

                Well, in that case, you could support your affiliates by telling them how they can bring traffic to their websites (maybe a free plr product), give them good banners, free articles that they can use on their websites, free videos, etc. By doing this you give your affiliates more to look forward.

    Take advantage of the situation and don't stop promoting your product but start testing different promotions or different keywords, i.e. Facebook ads, some small media buys (banners), etc.

    Then you could always keep in contact with your affiliates to let them know what is working and what isn't, this type of communication could help you develop a stronger affiliate relationship.

    In addition, check out the Warriors for Hire section for people to build affiliate tools page, I remember someone advertising there to complete this type of work.
