How Does Google Treat URL Shortening

I've been using Twitterfeed to send my blog content to a bunch of Web 2.0 sites. The links back to the sites are being shortened with bit.ly.

I have 2 questions:

1. Is it a problem that the feeds/blogs on my Web 2.0 sites only have links with bit.ly url in them? What I'm worried about is that google will see 100 bit.ly links and just disregard all but a few (even though the actual real urls go to 100 different domains)

2. Does this type of 301 redirect pass the same amount of link juice as the stock url would?

Thanks

  • Do a search for your shortened links in google and check if they are being crawled, and if they are what information is being displayed?

You definitely leave a footprint, and google is anti anything that doesn't make them money.

The problem with this is if bit.ly ever goes out of business or stops the service then all your links will be no good ...

It is best to use your own short urls with your own domain name...

Thanks for the quick replies. A couple more questions:

@InternetmarketingIQ - I'm not sure I follow you. If I take one of my URLs like this one: bit.ly/69jHCE

And do a search - Google tells me it has found that link on 2 different web pages - but that doesn't necessarily mean that it has followed the link to bit.ly (and then to my original site), it is basically just telling me that it has found that text on 2 pages -- ehhh, I think.

      I tried --- site:bit.ly/69jHCE

@therichjerknet - I thought about that and it scared the beejeezes out of me!

Unfortunately I'm using Twitterfeed to feed an RSS Mashup of a bunch of my splogs (thru Yahoo Pipes) to Ping.fm - and then sending that out to 20 different Web 2.0 sites.

Twitterfeed doesn't give me the option to do my own shortening (not that I would know how), or to bypass shortening of the URL - which would be better for me.

Any suggestions for alternate methods would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks Guys

just make a folder on your domain and name it something like 'says' inside the folder you can put 301 redirects anywhere using php files. Call them whatever you want .php

then link to them. If you want short url then name them a.php, b.php etc. If they are being used where shortness is not a factor, use 'this-is the-greatest-weight-loss-info.php' or whatever. If the affiliate program dies or a better one comes out, change the php file and that one change changes the landing page of every link you ever used that url in. makes keeping up with changing times much easier.
