hey guys,

Im going to start creating some Ereports and I am looking for an easy to use graphics creator. I know Photoshop is the head of the class but idont have the $$ to dish out for that right now.

i've tried using GIMP but its too complicated, does anyone have a suggestion for a free graphics creator ?

Photoshop is the best by far.

Instead of going for an alternative I recommend getting the cheaper Photoshop elements.

I suggest GIMP. Free and reliable.

Paintshop Pro. Now owned by Corel. $120 or so BUT every version after 9 (which was made when Jasc stilll owned it) verifies your ownership by contacting home before allowing use. It is my understanding that every version of Photoshop after 7 does that too. (The reason I won't use them, even a legal copy as it is really just spyware in disguise. Which is also why I won't use a Macromedia - Dreamweaver - or Adobe product. All very invasive. Abode free products are OK like reader, etc.) You can still find the 9 version on ebay every once and a while for 10-50 bucks. Version 7 is pretty good too. 8 had issues so if you get 8, make sure to get both updates. PM me if you get 8 as I have the updates lying around. It is about 95% as powerful as PS and the learning curve is a lot lower as well. I might have 7 at home, but am out of town for 3 weeks. If you haven't gotten something by then, PM and if I'll give it to you.

I've just being been trying to teach my grandaughter (14) how to use Paint.net for some editing and she said, at first, that it was too complicated! However, once she saw what was possible she's determined to try again. I think she'll win!

Whatever you end up using, there will be a learning curve. Any decent graphics program (I use Paint.net & Photoshop) will require effort, but I would say - pick one - and stick with it.

All the best with whatever you choose.

I have both Photoshop and PaintShop Pro.

PhotoShop gives me a headache, but I just love PSP!

I have CorelDraw and have had a hard time with the learning curve on that one myself. It does everything I seem to need, it's just that it takes me forever.

I was thinking of getting Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro, but I'm coming to think that good tutorials on the software I already have might be a better bet. I agree with previous posters; pick one and stick with it until you know how to use it.

    Good luck with your decision.

I use photoshop but have used both GIMP and Paint Shop Pro in the past and find that both of these are good. Another possibility for you could be paint.net which is free and has some functions. Not sure if it will be good enough though.

    Good Luck

You would be pleasantly surprised at how many functions it does have and what it can do - a lot of people get this mixed up with another well know paint program. Not so.

GIMP is excellent. The only complaint I have about it is that I've been using photoshop for some 12 years and since I've gone linux only I'm always having to reteach myself how to use GIMP. It's not radically different, I just wish they'd put some of the things in the same places as in PS.

I use Photoshop but have used and recommend Sumo Paint: Sumo Paint :: Online Image Editor :: Home for a free solution.

Lynda.com offers inexpensive training in most major software applications, including Photoshop and GIMP.

I have used Serif PhotoPlus which you can get for $25 (but, It's not as good as photoshop)

Another thing you may consider are two online editors
    - Picnik
    - FotoFlexer

    ~ I hope that helped

There are plenty of programs out there, but GIMP is probably the closest one to Photoshop. Unfortunately, you won't be able to run the popular ecover action scripts on it if you need to do that later.

GIMP is very good. Similar interface, but with a bit of a learning curve.

I think the main thing is to decide on what program you want to use (GIMP, PAIN.net etc) and set aside a few hours one weekend and overcome the learning curve.

Once you get pass that hurdle, you will be able to be productive.

GIMP is great. I'm no expert but it does what I need. I do however fall back to MS Paint every once in a while for very basic tasks. I've never used it but there is a modified version of GIMP called GimpShop which is supposed to replicate the interface to resemble PhotoShop.

If Gimp is too complicated, try GimpShop
GIMPshop.com - A GIMP hack by Scott Moschella

Alternatively, there are a number of other alternatives:
    PaintShopPro
    Xara
    SumoPaint (online)

Any one of these should be up to the task, but, if you don't have
much experience in creating graphics which convert, you may find
it beneficial to outsource - it's "nice" to be able to do it yourself,
but if the end result isn't going to convert - you will have wasted
time in order to save money.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

    You don't "NEED" Photoshop...

You could just use paper and tape things to the screen.

Do a Google search for "Online image editors". There are many very impressive tools that mimic the features of Gimp and Photoshop.

    HI Matt,

Is buying standalone OEM software not "Illegal", I mean OEM is only supposed to be sold with the hardware on which it came in the first place.

Also, will the method detailed in your pdf, work for people outside US?

Visit http://www.gimp.org/ to download and install.

Paint.net: A light paint application which has basics tools of photoshop.

Visit http://www.getpaint.net/ to download and install.

Photoshop is ther best but you do not have to buy the latest version and pay the huge fee for it.

Try looking to buy and older copy and you will pay a fraction of the cost.

I bought my copy from a business auction and it is CS2 but will do all I need and especially actions which is very important.

I think it cost $50 and came with lic and disks etc.

So don't go for the latest and greatest.

Photoshop is the best of the game and top of the line in our opinion, however if you feel GIMP is to complicated then Photoshop is just as complicated, maybe go check out online and search for some tutorials on GIMP and also on Photoshop and see which one you feel you learn better before making a decision on purchasing anything!
