So I created a website, added articles, submitted sitemap, added to google, bookmarked and waited for it to get indexed.

2-3 days ago I got indexed and instantly hit first page for the main keyword (probably because I had keyword phrase in the domain). I thought I'd build a few links today so I create a few profiles, without adding links yet (except a few), created a feed with the links, added it to some rss directories. I pinged all the links separately as well.

Now after a few hours of doing this, I do a search and my site just disappeared. I've tried some tools to see results for first 1000 searches and it shows nothing. And this wasn't personalized search (I checked it with proxies and some tools). The site is still in the index.

There is only one profile indexed that links back. I haven't added my links on other profiles yet (except 2-3, which are yet to be indexed). So my question is, is it normal? Should I keep on building links? Would love some expert advice.

I would say, keep building links, our site was up and down on the search results at the beginning too, after 2,3 months it got stable and has been ever since. Nobody really knows why Google does what Google does.

It's not unusual. It will probably reappear in a few days.

This is common and your site should return to the listing in a few days. It is not a guarantee that you will return to the first page but your site will return. Once that happens the new content and back links will help you improve on and maintain your search engine position.

Thanks, it seems like this usually happens when you start building links? I have another website that is on 1st page as well and is sitting there for over 10 days now, no backlinking done.

It could be what is referred to as the Google Dance. It's the period when Google is rebuilding its rankings. Search results can fluctuate widely for a 3 to 5 day period, which is thought to happen 10 times per year, or roughly every 36 days.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
