Why did you write that for Free ?

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the article/s you wrote for free. I really do. They were good. I realize you wanted to get your writing career started. It was a good move on your part... but...

Where are you? Why have I not heard from you again? I sort of owe you and probably would buy some articles. By now I've forgotten your name. You should be in my face for referrals, testimonials, more business. I should at least be on your list.

You won't bug me. I may not need an article today, but I will tomorrow and you would be one of the top in the running for that order.

Perhaps you are busy and so successful that you don't need my orders nor my referrals, but I kinda doubt it. Everyone needs more business at some point.

I like you. I like the way you write. I am super happy but I lost you. I'm hungry to know how you are doing and if I can do more business with you. Feed me please.

The service business is a business too... it takes structure in place, besides the initial gift.

I have seen it several times: the most talented, not necessarily are those who make it further.

All the IM courses are designed for the IM brokerage side of the business. Where someone who wants to become a successful outsourcer learns the ropes if his/her business?

We talked about this with some friends, and they told me these courses don't convert.

I'm sure it is because their lists are full of information brokers.

Will give it a try one of these days...

      Scott,

Sorry I haven't contacted you lately.

I am a very talented writer, but not a marketer. I've been told that I do good work, but I can't find the emails that said so. Someone told me I need a marketing plan, but I don't know what that is. I don't have a well thought out marketing plan. I didn't add you to a list, because I don't pay for an autoresponder. I'm not sure why I need one. I'm not really good at follow-up anyways. I just like to write, but I can't figure out how to make money with it.

If you'd like more articles, you'll have to contact me.

      Yours truly,

      Mark

Scott, I think the majority of people who offer free articles here, expect the person who received them to follow up if they are happy.

Look at it from the writers' point of view. They put up an offer for 10 free articles, and they say they would like a testimonial. They write the article and they get silence, they wait and more silence.

They take courage and send a message to the person ... they don't know if the person hated the work or not, and what happens? Nothing, zero zilch. How many times should they contact the person and be discouraged more than you could believe, because most don't reply to them.

For the writer starting out it is hard enough to get your name out and when most people who ask for free articles are nothing more than freebie seekers ... sorry but that is what it looks like when no responses are received, why, oh! why would they keep in touch?

If a person gets a free article then they do owe the writer something. Common decency in replying to them, which is what a lot of writers want. Why do you think many quit? Because they think their work is useless.

When a client pays me, I don't bug them, if they don't relpy to the follow up emails I take it they don't want to be followed up.

Mark, if you are good and want some advertising, PM me. I have a PLR article directory. Can give you advertising space in exchange of a couple of articles (linking to your profile or something, we can figure a way that works for everybody). It would be a better leverage for your work and give you more exposure.

        Laura,

LOL, my post was done tongue in cheek, as I believe Scott's was. I wasn't describing myself, but the kind of people that Scott may have had articles written by. I think I've used some of the same writers Scott has. But I always leave a testimonial, it's the least I can do.

Also, I signed up for your YumPLR last week. Thanks for the offer. Great stuff. Keep it up!

I think that the more important thing is that writers follow-up when I contact them.

As a buyer, I want good stuff. When I find writers that produce good stuff, I maintain a list of them. I keep track of whom to contact for what. I don't care if they send me eMails or newsletters or anything. In fact, it's better if they don't. Less clutter.

Though, it is important that they send a message if they change their contact information.

The bottom line is that, when I need something, I'll contact them.

That's when they need to follow-up.

For example, a couple years ago (or so), I contacted a freelancer and asked what she would charge for a such and such. She sent me back her price list. I looked over the price list, and had more questions, namely because two things contradicted each other. So, which would be the correct price for what I wanted? I sent an inquiry asking for clarification.

            Never heard back.

        Wow this thread describes me!!!

My journey trying to make money writing articles.

My first article for review I sent to one of the respected warrior here and was dismissed as too salesy.

The second one to another writer was good but I needed more editing.

Then I offered the free five articles thing and..

Two people loved me, three gave me average and took off. One told me I am too low quality.( I wrote back hoping she could train me to be better but no). This was the last straw for me.

One of the people who liked me, avenue girl, sent me a client, I wrote back to him and he never got back to me.

I tried setting up a site but due to the negative reports I sort of gave up.

Ironically, I love writing articles. I really love researching and writing, even though I got some training going now, setting up sites and all that. I write one article a day to ezine articles. I cannot stop, This weekend while just playing with keywords, I wrote twenty articles. I know they are not pertfcet but I loved doing it.

I came to the conclusion, it is a hard game and I am so shy to follow someone, especially when they look so experienced.

I have tried paid sites that are really paying so low that I figured maybe I just learn SEO and have the articles in my site.

And by the way I tried outsourcing some articles at odesk and from this one writer there and they were so badly written, however I paid for them since I felt her pain if I refused saying her articles were bad. I was not paying much I just edited them and used them.

I thought this was one of the ways I could make some money, I actually wanted just 100 bucks to offset somethings. It never worked.

I am not the giving up type so now I look back and say, maybe I should take some time, learn more and then launch a WSO or get some good writers and hire them to write for me.

Yes this thread is about me and thank you all for sharing, next time I will be better.

Though things have not worked for me so far, I am really focusing on affiliate marketing and to work on info products.

Happy, blessed new year to all.
        Cheers, glass raised!!!

Bev has it right...there is a certain shyness inherent in someone willing to offer writing for free. Shyness and an uncertainty. So when they provide the free work and there is no followup from the recipient they feel that perhaps their free work was not worth the testimonial and are too insecure to ask for it. Or for some feedback in case their work was not worth it.

Can I say, my post is based on many writers who have gone the free route and then came to me to ask what they should do.

Take a look at the free article threads, and how the same people are asking for the article, and then not following through. What does that make the person getting the articles? Freebie seekers.

Scott, can I ask do you ever send feedback when you get a free articles, and if not why not?

I received a free article in an email from a stranger who grabbed my addie from somewhere. It was well written - on travel - and I wanted to give her credit in my online travel guide, and invite her to submit more. When I tried to email her at any of the contacts I could find on her message, they came back as undeliverable.

Still trying to figure out what her expectations were in sending it to me. There was no way to ask for clarification, more details, photos or anything else that would have made the article more useable.

    Go figure.

    Sometimes I'm just a flake.

I'll get an email and say "I don't know how to respond to that, I'll have to think about it a little" so I set it aside.

And then a week later, I go "oh crap I should have responded," and then I think "it's been a week, this guy's going to email me back all mad and give me hell for taking so long to respond" so I don't.

So if you asked me something and I never responded, that's probably why. And what really helps is to receive the occasional email that says "hey, it's cool, I'm not mad at you" so I know not to be afraid of emailing you.

Yeah, I know, it's silly. But it is what it is, you know? That's what happens, even though it really shouldn't. Sometimes I just think I really shouldn't have clients at all, because I'm terrible at managing the contractor-client relationship.

Hmmmm, I have everyone of my clients in a list. Even the ones I initially sent a free article to. I don't email them often, around once a month.

If I run a WSO for a special price, I email them, and offer them the same price.

I've never offered free articles through a forum post on WF. I've only offered a free article to people who I know are article buyers and I'd value their feedback, and their business.

So, Scott... Want to be on my list?

P.S. CDarkLock, I've done the same damn thing. I usually go ahead and email them, most of them reply nicely, but I'm sure embarrassed when it happens. Which reminds me, I need to review my inbox again.

Perhaps you are busy and so successful that you don't need my orders nor my referrals, but I kinda doubt it. Everyone needs more business at some point.

I think if this was an article you were promised sometime in the last 2 weeks, you should cut some slack.

I just got emails in the past couple of days on some writing offered that was running late and I think the Holidays screwed up a lot of people.

I was forced into playing about a hundred different games on the new Wii system my friend bought, and scolded for being on the computer trying to get some work done. Perhaps your article writers were scolded by their families and forced to do human things.

All I know is I have the house back to myself today and finally feel relieved.
