Tracking your traffic... ideas?

This is probably going to sound really dumb, but I need help figuring out tracking links.

As you know, the big trick to make the most of your marketing efforts is to track where your traffic comes from. I've tried several ways to do this and always get confused with my fancy coding systems.

If I put an article on EA, I can create a special page on my site to send those people. That's one option, but very time consuming and more work than necessary.

I have a tracking program installed on one of my sites that lets me create these special tracking links. This is where my coding system falls apart.

It's probably much easier than I'm making it, but does someone have a workable system for tracking your traffic?

As I said, I already have a program that will do it, but how do you name your special links?

My mistake, I think, was creating one tracking link for EA, and then using it for different articles that I post there. So I have no idea which article or resource box was the most effective in driving traffic.

Giving each and every article a special tracking link sounds wrong to me.

And then there are other forms of marketing that do not involve article submissions. Like, dropping comments on blogs, viral products, and ad placements, etc.

Any tips you can provide would be much appreciated.

Please share your tracking methods?

Thanks.

Sylvia

You can check traffic in your control panel. In the alternative you can install google analytics on every page of your site and it will tell you exactly where traffic comes from. Hope that helps

I do have Google Analytics, but it doesn't tell you which article, as in EzineArticles. It shows 62 visits from that site, but no details that I'm looking for. The same with other traffic sources. It just gives the main domain. So if I post an article on one of my Squidoo lenses, it won't tell me which article made people click.

Also, there is one site stat that I do not understand... where it gives you a bounce rate. What does that mean? Google Analytics is showing me 85% for one site, which I'm guessing is a bad thing.

    Hi Sylvia,

Good thing for you is that you seem to have a lot going on,
so the need for a good tracking system in place.

There are several options I know like..

    1. Statcounter
    2. Google Analytics
    3. Awstats - available in your cpanel if your hosting has it.
    Mine came with it.

There was a warrior here recently who recommended several tools.
I think one of those tools got several positive response...I just can't
recall the thread title..but it was made only a day or two ago..

    All the best,

Google analytics provides you with where each bit of traffic comes from. If you click on the domain it comes from it should break it down very specifically.

I can see the exact post that sends traffic to my website.

Make sure you click on referring site and then click on the domain for a full break down.
