I'm sure this can make money...but how?

Hey folks -

My brother-in-law has a site that I'm sure can make money for him in at least one form or another. (He doesn't know I'm writing this, but I'll bet he'd appreciate some ideas.)

He runs a site (he has for maybe 1-2 years or so?) that gets a good amount of traffic. I know that is relative, but I can't remember what he's at with the numbers. He did not start off doing it for anything other than his passion. He built it up slowly and has been "famous" in his niche for some time now. The traffic is consistent and the niche dedicated. It's small - maybe three or four thousand.

But I want to stress again this was a "hobby" and intense love of his. I say that because his mind-set is different from those here looking to run sites for their business. Yet his passion and dedication has allowed him to amass a large and totally devoted readership and fanbase of his work. (He reports on professional boxing in Minnesota.)

He used to box, loves all things Minnesota boxing and he has a lot of major names in boxing (that I'm sure you nor I had ever heard of) as personal friends and contacts. He's scored big interviews with these folks and reports on all the events in Minnesota.

Anyway - Due to a few changes in his life (a new child coming, painful non-boxing related surgery that's put him out for a while, weariness with the time cosumption etc) he is pretty much letting go of his site.

He might just stay in if he could monetize it. I've told him he could do exclusive stuff (audio interviews or whatever) and other things on a low ($5.95,$9.95) membership fee. Or who knows. I'm really not sure. Something along those lines.

He's always said he'd love to monetize that site if he could, but that was always secondary. I don't think he's holding out for that at all, but I think it might help him stay in if he thought he could justify it.

He's always checking his phone for comments, updating the site etc. So I think he's just tired of working so much and so hard. He loves it, but a new chapter in his life is going to start (second child) and it might be hard for him to do unless he can earn at least a meager living on it.

If nothing else, could he sell it? Is it worth anything? I'd rather see him do that than just "quit". God bless him I love the guy

The site is MN Boxing League

Thank you...

    Ideas...

Maybe he could work out a deal with the event promoters and sell tickets to the events as an affiliate...

    Possibly sell boxing training equipment?

Sell more adspace to local merchants: sportsbars, etc... do promotions for them -- i.e... free pitcher if you mention the site...

Possibly sign up as an affiliate for some of the sports betting sites - like bodog.com

Lastly, sell the site to one of the mn boxing venues -- they might want it to be able to better promote themselves to their audience...

If he has repeat viewers, perhaps if he rearranged his posts so that there was an offer (the same offer) above the fold on every page and post. Like with Nanobloggers or with Chris Rempel's AffGenie. You don't have to get those, they just use that idea of showing the same offer a lot of places on their sites. And it was a low cost item, or an optin for a free interview, he might be able to make a bit from that. He could sell it just based on the traffic, but unless its a bunch of traffic, he might not be able to recoup his time investment in the site.

Looks like he already has some local advertisers on the site. Maybe he should try and get more local businesses to advertise on the site. I would think many businesses are looking for better ways to advertise to the local community right now.

With that niche, most of my friends are only earning on adsense. He can also earn by adding some ads like adengage or projectwonderful. Selling it is an alternative, add something on the site that it is for sale if the price is good only. Add google analytics to check for the traffic so potential buyers could see it. Take a snap shot of the traffic and post it somewhere within the site.

Great thoughts guys. Thank you. I'm just not too familiar with doing some of those things, but I want to take to him all the suggestions I can. I'd just like to see his work rewarded if possible.
