Traffic, traffic, traffic... what about buyers?

I've seen a lot of threads about how to get more traffic recently...

Whether it's:

How do I get Twitter Traffic?
How much traffic would make you happy?
How can I get more visitors to my site?
etc.

This advice goes out to anyone who isn't yet making sales...

DO NOT FOCUS ON TRAFFIC...
DO NOT EVEN FOCUS ON TARGETED TRAFFIC...

FOCUS ON BUYERS...

Here's a little analogy...

You run a furniture shop - a very popular shop, you give away free candy (sweeties) in order to entice people in. Everyone loves your free sweeties, and people ask lots and lots of questions about your sweeties, but nobody is buying... but it's ok, because you love lots and lots of people in your shop, they're so nice and friendly - and they make you feel important.

What on earth do you want so many people in your shop for?
If they're not buying, why are they there? You might as well close the shop down.

They're costing you money...

Staff, bandwidth, time (answering queries) etc.

Of course, you've got the benefit of 'conversion testing and tracking' - but, why not try doing things in reverse?

Instead of throwing up a website, and thinking:
"What next?"

Find a group of hungry buyers and ask yourself:
"What do they want?"

Look for the buyers, hang out where they hang out - get in their heads, then get in their faces. Just like the guy at the big game with the hot-dog stand.

P.S. Why am I up so late? - Night all...

    Good points Karl.

You have got to strategize and target a certain group whether broad or slim you have got to advertise for your niche crowd. I agree completely.

We do not sell anything on our site, not directly anyway. The biggest revenue source we have is adsence, so what I have noticed is what more traffic we get it converts to more clicks, more clicks more money. Call me crazy but I think more traffic gives you more opportunities.

This is a fair point, it's a little late here - and my post relates mostly to product owners and affiliates. I should have clarified that.

      Kindest regards,
      Karl.

I totally Sooooo Agree with You!

I even went as far as creating a Market Reach for the Sports Industry for a client to sell his jerseys. It's all about the demographics...screw Google when you finally come to the realization that you can dance on this level. And...it doesn't empty your pocket book while taking the time to blink.

Agreed, for the most part people are like locusts, there may be billions of them but it is no good if all they do is take and give nothing back.

The case was proved so poignantly in that friends episode where Monica makes all the candy, no one really cared for her and when it is all gone they simply leave, never once even giving a thank you.
