I'm a bit of a romantic paranormal/fantasty science fiction freak and have hundreds of books I've bought over the years. I've been convalescing since early Dec from some surgery so I decided to have a good clear out at home, opened a reseller account at Amazon on Dec 13th and uploaded them all.

To my surprise I've just about sold the lot to the tune of a few hundred dollars. So I've decluttered my bookshelves and made some money back in the process. (Very cool)

There is obviously a hungry market out there for this type of thing, so can't help thinking a site with a few decent affiliate links etc could possibly make a few bob here and there if anyone was interested

Cheers
Kim

I think the success of the Twilight series (paranormal romance) is an indication enough that there's big money to be made in this niche

I hope this niche is profitable. I'm relaunching a site in this niche. I've had it for years. Even had an Amazon affiliate link with recommendations on there. Last month, I had several thousand visitors. Sales: $0.

Thanks Kim. I love this series as well. I had a similar experience over Christmas on Amazon only in the Gardening niche. I guess us brits stuck in were thinking about the slow approaching spring!

Kim, great idea! It would never work for me though because I hang onto the books I enjoy and re-read them again later on.

Kelley Armstrong has a great series of paranormal novels - werewolves, vampires, witches, sorcerers and necromancers all living in modern times and hiding their talents from humans. I have all of them so far and I'm not selling them.

I was the same as you Wendy (I wouldn't give them up) but I decided it was either have a good clear out or build an extension on the house to accomoate them all.

I'm just gonna source out some other authors and start again probably. BTW Christine Feehan is another excellent writer. I love her Dark Slayer and Ghost Walker series.

Karen Chance is another popular writer in this genre as well as is Sherrilyn Kenyon (No wonder I don't have time for IM, I'm too busy reading saucy novels)

Maybe I'm not getting the romance angle right. A lot of stories on my site tend to end with someone getting eaten as dinner.

LOL! Actually some of the characters in these books can change into wolf form, hunt and eat someone/something for dinner, then change back into human form for the romance part, all in one night. Talk about talent!

I think you still need to have a romance background to write scifi/fantasy romance stories. I can't seem to write anything romantic without it turning into scifi/fantasy or horror.

I think I've only done one such story that didn't have a fantasy ending. The first draft didn't. I think the second draft did. The final story didn't, but it still had a twist ending, so even that wasn't a straight romance story.

Ack Kim, now I'm going to have to build an extension, especially now that you told me about these other authors - never read any of their stuff but I'm certainly going to now!

The good thing about paperbacks is that you can squeeze a lot of them into a small space - you could probably stack about 50 of them floor to ceiling...

          Thanks for the recommendations!

This is an interesting question as I have been working on an experiment on a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novel of my own, but writing it in serial fashion (ala Charles Dickens) on my copywriting blog (See link below). I have links off to my affiliate and product sites, especially if a keyword is used in the novel (but I am not stuffing anything as that would sully the meaning of the writing in this case) - For example I have affiliate pages for Absinthe, which incedentilly is the name of the novel.

I saw a guy writing a novel in this fashion on a "comic" site - he is taking a break from writing the comic and is displaying his novel one page a day (the comic is "Pibgorn" if you are interested). I thought this might work on a blog.

The statistics are that I get lots of traffic when I post each chapter which fades out fairly quickly to a low level, however I also see each of the preceding chapters get new juice as each new chapter is posted. I am also putting up audio of each chapter as I get time.

    It's an interesting concept - unfortunately I have so much other stuff to do that it is usually awhile between chapter posting;

I would be interested in anyone else who has dabbled with this idea!

Tons and tons of people love paranormal/fantasy romance ... and romance in general. The Twilight series of books made lots of sales, yes, but also look at Sherrilyn Kenyon and Karen Marie Moning, two other popular authors writing in this genre.

Heck, even my own Legacy of Sleepy Hollow has some paranormal seeming elements in it, though it plays out differently than you think it will. (Yeah, I couldn't resist putting that there)

Romance, in all its various flavors, sells. There are many different ways to make money in this niche...MANY. How do I know? I've dabbled in it a bit myself.

You paranormal romance lovers might also enjoy the Trueblood series of books.

I'd been following the TV series, so my daughter gave me a collection for Christmas which contained the first three novels. I was surprised to find that there were 10 novels in the series to date, by Charlaine Harris. I'll have to locate the next in the series.

Sookie Stackhouse makes Bella (Twilight novels) look like a whining wimp. Where Twilght has the teens panting, Trueblood is Twilght for adults. (Yes, I've read all the Twilight novels - my daughter gets them out of the library to avoid cluttering up the place.)

I second this! The Trueblood (aka. Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse series when in book form) is really great. The TV show is also great, but I personally like the books better...

Another series of books worth recommending is Vampire Diaries (now also available as a TV show). I read it a couple of years back (bought it from Amazon's used section before it was reprinted ;D) it's by LJ Smith.

I just discovered virtual worlds through a client assignment and am getting hooked. It's fascinating to watch avatars flying through alien planet scenery and be able to morph into fantasy creatures with tails and wings. I was shocked to find out how huge the market is.

I've been a sci fi fan from way back -- original Star Trek, Isaac Asimov & the Foundation Trilogy, Robert Heinlein...(guess that makes me a 'vintage' sci fi fan. ).

I just hadn't paid much attention to that market since I've been working online. My eyes have been opened.

Ah but it's not really about being scared (as such). A lot of the stuff we women like (and maybe a few of the blokes) is the erotic/romantic steamy stuff. Takes us out of our humdrum lives for a while

I just had a thought, reading through this thread gives you lots of ideas on how to start a site on this type of subject. I'm tempted, but I've already got a few projects on the go

'Stranger in a Strange Land' (Heinlein) and 'Dune' were classics of the SF genre. The Dune series seems to have been continued by Frank Herbert's son. However, these don't have the sort of romance and eroticism that is to be found in Twilight and Trueblood. They'd be closer in style to the 'Avatar' movie which was released recently.

I write fiction and have been thinking about publishing some of my writing. One thought that went through my mind though, was, perhaps a unique way to launch a story line might be through the use of illustrated comic book format, except in my case via the web.

Am I crazy to think that it might gain a following by launching that way? Sometimes I write about vampires, other times it's assassins.
