Don't Let Ideas Escape! - How you deal with this...

Everybody knows that if you don't write down or otherwise record a good idea, you'll lose it.

So...

How do you record ideas when you're out and about? Do you carry around a pen and paper? Voice recorder? Call yourself and leave a phone message?

When you post your response, be specific.

I carry a notebook and pen, keep it next to my bed too.

The amount of times an idea has struck while drifting off to sleep and I didn't take note is criminal.

I keep a small pocket notepad and write them down. Then, after I get home, I put them in my ideas folder that sits on my desk.

Note function on my phone - works great, has such good resolution it's identical to my writing on pen and paper and even does word recognition for transfer to files later.

Creativity Hacks by Chuck Frey has a whole section on not letting your ideas escape. I think there were some 20 capture techniques. I really found the ebook useful and reviewed it on my Inventing Elephants blog - with an affiliate link, of course.

Personally I stick to the basic notebook. My problem is more finding them after they're caught. That's why I wish I could do it electronically all the time so I could search the darn things.

I've let far too many ideas slip, especially for sales pages. I always think of a good point to include, or a better way to pitch something but always end up loosing them.

A notebook is a good idea but I cant see myself wanting or remembering to take it somewhere. If you're fortunate enough to have an iphone or similar (I'm not), make use of the notes area then write them down when you get home.

Pad and pen in my car, by my bed, and I've been known to use bar napkins.

Was just looking at voice activated pocket digital recorders the other day though. I'll probably grab one as soon as I get a chance to do some online research. If you use one and are happy with it, toss out the name and save me the research! Voice quality is a must, as well as USB upload to my computer as I plan on making audio files for distribution.

I use an ideas notebook, Dragon Dictate on the iPhone and Evernote to keep myself on track. I do daily, weekly, and monthly reviews to optimize what I'm working on at any given time.

I use a combination of methods. First what ever is handiest pen, paper, napkin, paper cup ... corner of an envelope ... you get the idea. But one of the things I love most for organizing it all is Microsoft Office One Note. It is amazing. And right now you can get the 2010 Beta edition free from their website. You can screen capture things with a click and paste it into the notebook instantly, it is tabbed for ease of sorting. You can write with a pen ...jot notes ... draw ... paste web addresses ... you name it an you can do it.

Hope that helps. I am waiting for my profile to update ... please excuse the out of date signature the url no longer exits.

I have recently begun keeping a notepad and pen next to my computer, and I've found that it really helps when inspiration strikes. I also use the voice recorder on my cellphone when I'm out and about, and really need to record something!
