Is this a step too far?

I'm kind of lazy. I don't mind admitting it.

I often work at the computer in my dressing gown, and sometimes think to myself "man it's a real pain having to get smartened up just to shoot a quick video, why bother"

So I'm thinking just shoot videos as I am in all my lazy glory, instead of presenting a certain image on camera.

Is this a step too far for IM? Is the world ready to see me in my dressing gown? Or has working (mostly) by myself finally convinced my brain to do something that no man, woman or child should ever see?

I think that it's like a girl and clothes, she may be wearing the most outrageous outfit you have ever seen, crazy colors patterns, shapes etc. But the question you have to ask your self is...Does she pull it off.

In my eyes a girl can wear anything she wants, as long as she pulls it off. If you think that your customers will relate to you sitting there lazily selling them things in your dressing gown and that you could "pull it off" then why not. But honestly, do you really think people will go for it?

I think you know the answer to that question...

      LOL! Hell yeas!

Seriously though, it's not so much about a marketing gimic as in; do you and the other good folks here think it would stop people from purchasing. Would it give you second thoughts about buying from someone.

Vil's answer is a good one.

It reminds me of a story I heard about a multi-millionaire in Australia by one of the people he mentored. This lady said she went over to his house during her lunch break to drop off a package. She found him by his pool, dressed in his bed gown, slippers on his feet, stubble on his face, walking around with his 3 year old son. At 1pm on a Monday!

She said this was the most inspiring moment for her, because that was when she decided that was what SHE wanted to be doing at 1pm on a Monday afternoon instead of being at work!

Anyway, I guess Vil is right. You have to be able to pull it off in the right way.

Unless, perhaps, that's specifically part of the point you're trying to make in the video? "Join this business and you can work at home in your dressing gown". That kind of presentation. But otherwise, I wouldn't even think about it.
This lady just keeps talking perfect sense in every thread I've seen her post. And she's done it again in this one. Couldn't agree more.

      Depends on your target market.

In the porn niche, you're probably overdressed.

In general though, you want to display a professional image.

Split test two videos...one professional and one lazy, with tracking links
at the end of each one.

      See which one performs better.

If the point of your video is that you can "make money while you sleep" - you might have something going. As in "hi guys. Look I just got up and see I made $xxx overnight. I'm off for a long, lazy soak in the bath - maybe I'll make another $xxx before I even get dressed", type of thing.

Otherwise - why would anyone want to see you in your dressing gown? "I can't be bothered to get dressed for you, my viewer" = "I, your buyer, can't be bothered to watch your presentation". Show your viewers a bit of respect.

Everyone's got a point here. See, if you're promoting a vacation package to some exotic place I won't expect the person in the video to be wearing a office attire. I'd expect him/her to be wearing beach attire!

But you mentioned that "I'm kind of lazy. I don't mind admitting it." Just make sure that when you're filming the videos you don't convey the laziness in your speech and actions. Be confident.

Does professional really sell now? Personally... I am getting bored of people well dressed in videos, all smartened up and looking all professional. It would be much more fun to watch if he had a big fluffy pink afro and a dodgy beard on and thats why frank kerns wears his viking hat at seminars to get peoples attention. I feel wearing something professional is playing it safe, if your wearing something outrageous but kinda funny then I would take that video anyday of the week.

Honestly I think it could work incredibly well. I do think that there are plenty of people whom wish they didn't have to get dressed each and every day.

Honestly, if I saw some guy with footy pajamas on talking about IM, I'd be more likely to tune in then someone looking like a used car salesman.

Maybe try it under a pen name or something if you're unsure.

If you don't fancy getting changed in the
morning. Just write up all your points in a
    Powerpoint presentation, include screenshots
and pictures etc.. and after just talk over the
presentation explaining it all in detail. Export to
    video format and upload.

I've found these work brilliant if they're
    presented professionally.

There have been some good points made above, but I would love to see the results of an experiment like this...
