I had a very interesting and illuminating discussion with a good friend of mine over the Christmas period about making money.

My friend is in the building trade and works as a floor layer.

Obviously due to the recent recession his work flow has dried up somewhat in recent months and he told me that this was causing problems in his marriage.

Basically, he explained that for the last few years he had been earning some great money in the building trade and he quoted figures of £80,000+ per year but now recently his wages have dropped to around £30,000 per year.

He explained that his wife was now complaining that he didn't earn enough money and that he should try and earn more somehow.

I said that I was staggered he was earning that much in the first place but that I still thought £30,000 per year was a good wage.

He was under the impression for some reason that my partner and I earned a lot of money ourselves - we don't, comparitively, but we do feel that we earn enough for our needs to feel comfortable.

I have always had an ambition to work from home and earn around £3,000 per month which I don't think is unrealistic.

I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on this.

Your title says How much is enough. For me its a years worth of savings. I try not to look at how much I want to make each month, but getting savings put away. Getting money set aside should be everyones main gaol.

      Good advice there Tyler.

I still don't have a pension set up or any provision for my twilight years.

Everyone has different idea's of how much is enough. I have a friend that features in the Times Rich List and is worth more than £100m, his ex-wife (who worked with him in the business) had a heart attack at 55 and died. He still puts in 16-18 hour days as he has a desire to earn more!

I have been out of work 1 and a half years. I will likely not be able to work full time again. There is no enough, save all you can, learn to live below your means and tell your friend to divorce that nasty woman!

We are human and we want more and more. So, for me nothing is enough. I am greedy.

    The World is not enough...

.....well according to one film/documentary I saw about some guy who was in the British Secret Service.

Enough in the short term for me would be enough to feed me and have a roof over my head. In the longer term, I agree with Tyler, I'd like to have a good amount of savings. However, my long term goal is to build not just savings, but assets, that will look after my current family, and future family for generations to come. I am greedy though.

It's a pretty subjective question. Everyone's wants, desires and needs are different. It's all relative and depends largely on what you are used to, and what environment you have been living in.

It's all relative to what your goals are. Personally my goal is to save 6 - 12 months of an "emergency" fund, have a modest paid off new car I can keep for 10+ years, (since my current car is 20 years old) and pay off a college loan. Then $2 - 3,000 a month would be a dream.

Whereas once a relative told me "A million dollars a year isn't as much as you think"...so with many people the more they make, the more they spend. Then again I try to live simply and have no desire to spend on "more stuff" unless I need it. Whereas others can't be happy unless they are driving a new BMW and have a McMansion, which is fine for them....everyone is different.

I'd hate to be that guy with his wife complaining like that... it's not like he isn't trying.

How much for me would be enough for me and my wife to both quit our jobs and focus 100% to our internet business. It would take no less than $150,000 yearly to make that happen. Considering that I made my first sale on Sunday for $9.99 I think I have a long way to go. Hopefully by the ned of the year I will have made some serious headway!

Interesting question indeed, the short answer being it differs from person to person.

The long story, I want to earn enough to come around with, meaning providing me with a decent income to have a house a car and a family and support mom and dad a bit. Ergo, my goal is around 3000-4000$ a month. Working at home with Internet Marketing, currently @ 0.00$ a month though, only started 17 days ago. I am blessed with an agile mind, meaning I know my share off SEO, PPV, PPC, CPA, Ads you name it and I know the gist of it. The problem is sticking with one plan. Now I have all the information, but I can't decide which plan to stick to.
Damn I went offtopic there, the short version off my long version is around 3000-4000$ a month, but I will need a guide or experience person to help me map my business model.

I'm having enough trouble trying to support my family as it is. Worrying about the future? I've got to take care of today first.

How much is enough? I'd just like to get to a point where I can pay rent, put food on the table, put a little gas in the car, buy insurance for the family, and a little money for my wife and daughter to buy a new outfit every once in a while. So far that's been like shooting for the moon. If I could accomplish that, everything else would be icing on the cake.

That story does make me grateful to have the patient wife I have now.

Enough for food, shelter and the occasional Dolce & Gabbana dress.

No, seriously, being used to the outrageous claims in IM lists I was kinda surprised with the common sense of all your replies. I too think 3K (Euro or $ depending on where you live) would be enough as monthly income, even 2K if there's no mortgage or rent to pay.
