Free and Reliable Autoresponder for a not-so-Newbie

Hi!

I have been reading about having a list. itseems that lots of ppl are putting emphasis on having a list.

The PROBLEM for me is I would not be able to buy an autoresponder software now.

If any of you can recommend a free and reliable auto responder system, pls let me know.

Thanks

I don't think going to free route is the best solution. I'd definitely pay for something like Aweber or Getresponse if I was you.

But if you really need a free self hosted solution then you can maybe check out this:

      Reinhardt,

I am not good with scripting yet. I have just learned about XHTML/CSS and some validation. Definitely a noob in this area.

For now, I might be putting a blogger while setting up a wordpress.

      Thanks

Probably it is better to think in terms of buying a service not a software.

The best free route is to use Microsoft Outlook and setup responses. Its not the best route but its free and will get you started.

Once you see that your list is growing then you can move over to a site like aweber.

No, it is not. As with the self-hosted solutions, most likely you will have deliverability issues.

I see a number of problems with this method:

1 - Your ISP may not love you if your list grows to an appreciable size and you want to do a mass mailing.

2 - If you start establishing a list here and want to eventually move to a professional service like AWeber you'll have to get everyone to sign up again - AWeber won't let you import your Outlook Address Book.

3 - As far as I know you can't schedule a series of mailings to occur for each subscriber on a preset basis like you can with a real autoresponder. In other words, have a subscriber receive content on a daily basis for 7 days (i.e. an e-course) after subscribing.

4 - The delivery problems as Istvan has already pointed out.

5 - Potential CAN SPAM issues as you really don't have a way to have users opt in to your list.

Personally I'd just pay the price for a proper autoresponder. Compared to other businesses Internet Marketing has a very low startup cost, however there are some expenses the must be incurred if you are really serious about working online.

Best of luck with whatever route you choose.

I am relatively a newbie. Hope you don't mind with my questions.

If in future, I decided to change from mailchimp.com to getresponse or aweber, can I have a smooth transfer from one to another?

Secondly, if you have used mailchimp.com, what is your opinion on the deliverability?

      Thanks a million

Istvan, that the first time I have heard of Mailchimp. Their pricing beyond the free option appears reasonable. All that is left to check is the deliverability.

I have gone through the autoresponder search being new to IM. Right now your best deal on one is the 30 day free trial on aweber. You might try this, they are the best. Without a list your not going to do very well-

I also agree that the best way is to use 30 days free trial of Aweber. Simply the best system for your problem.

Kitty, the two big issues you want to watch for with an autoresponder are
    1) deliverability
    2) upgrade path

    Deliverability:
You want your emails to reach their intended recipients, right? Not much point otherwise. The big guns like Aweber and getresponse have relationships with places like AOL, Yahoomail etc so they are trusted senders and teh messages get though. Smaller autoresponder services and especially self-hosted solutions may not have this in place and your emails will just get dropped into the spam bin.

    Upgrade Path
If you start with something cheap or free, whatever you use, you want to be able to transfer your list to a better service later if you need to. Having to dump your list and start over is a real bummer.
