Flippers: What if I Sell a QUALITY Site?

by milan

I've just checked the forum's 'Sites For Sale' and it seems that only sites that can be sold for around a hundred bucks or less get enough interest.

I have a social networking add-on kind of site that I've spent time programming and designing. It's a very original idea and site. The problem is, it's not monetized (yet), so the potential buyers would have to like the site and idea and be into social networks.

Which marketplace would be good for this site?

This is my SPECIALTY. Just because the sites that usually sell here on WF are under a few hundred dollars doesn't mean that the larger ones won't sell, trust me. Either use a brokerage if the site really has great content and great idea/concept, or you can use sites like Flippa.com, WebsiteBroker.com, etc. We buy websites a lot, if you want, PM me with some details and I will give you an appraisal.

You can list it on Flippa. Hard to say how much you would get with no monetization. Does it get any traffic? It would of course, have to be sold to someone with a strong interest in the site since it has not been monetized, so they don't know the potential ROI.

    Thank you.
@cgcmarketing if you're into business sites, this might not be your specialty. This is an entertainment kind of site with a potential to go viral through social networking sites. And how do you value a potential? I have PM'ed you.
    @sbucciarel
It does have organic traffic ( http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/3783/mbir.jpg ), because it's built with good inner SEO in mind and the content is user generated. The SEO traffic is better for monetization but in this case it's completely different from the purpose of the site: a viral site to be shared on social networks.

Yeah you can definitely sell a quality site.

If your site has an amazing potential, try to contact big firms (million dollar companies which have extra money to invest) and they will invest in your project for sure.

A friend of mine managed to sold a site for $50,000 while that site is still in beta version. So everything is possible.

One problem is that many people think Flippa and WF are the only place to sell sites. It's definitely NOT.

Similar to offline consulting, it's always a good idea to call up companies who are ready to invest. Most of these companies will see a few thousand dollars as peanuts.

If no companies want your site, you might want to look for busy professionals who are looking to generate passive income.

Otherwise, you have no choice but to list it on Flippa or find a broker.

    Cheers,
    Desmond

A fellow member at a domaining forum sold his high quality music app (covered by TechCrunch and Mashable) at Flippa for around 50-60k

Flippa certainly has the buyers if you have a good product. Give it a shot

Guys, I don't want to get big bucks, just $1000 to cover some time investment and get rid of the site. This is just an entertainment kind of site, with a potential to go viral or potential to flop. I would need a lot of to justify the big price tag for this to a business man (kids would love this though but they have no money).

A good way to see how to monetise it would be to release it onto facebook with a huge promotion campaign where you simply post on many forums and let it know what it does and what it is capable of and see if it gets any takers?

If the only place to get it is your own site you may make a little money there, without having a clue what your little gadget is how can we really suggest anything?

A no hope outfit pretty much took a guys work from him for $50,000 back in the day and immediately went back to IBM and Microsoft was born. Before that they had nothing.

If your small piece of technology is really great and the must have toy of 2010 simply let someone co-own 50% of it for $1,000 and help get it out there. You really don't want to be the bloke who sold the most powerful computer program in the world for peanuts do you?

(Hell, give them 90% for $900 and take a royalty)

I'm not interested in that anymore. Personal reasons. A very good friend who helped me develop the site has died (accident) and I don't have the heart to develop it. I just want to get rid of it.

Well, as the title and the message say I'm looking for a way to sell the site, not any suggestions on how to develop it.

I'm not hiding it. If you're curious to see it you can just PM me. (it's free and completely non IM related but I don't want to be even remotely seen as self promoting).

I'm doing good online. If I'd be honest to myself, I earn quite more than I need. So, I don't mind giving this site for peanuts, because I just know I will not do anything with it now. If somebody else can make something out of it - I'll feel happy for him. If somebody else can make a fortune - great. I'm not going to be jealous. I tried to make myself work on this for months, and I can't anymore.

monetizing a "viral" app can be pretty hard...just ask the guys at Twitter.

You have to look at its potential for attracting future traffic and growth. I'm pretty sure Twitter seemed like a fun little app for kids to play around with when it was first created. Look how it turned out.

My point is: you never really know the true potential of an app unless you release it into the water and test it out. If you see even a slight chance of it growing as a strong standalone app, I would suggest you keep it with you and explore some financing options - VC or angel money

That's my point as well. That's the reason I'm not comfortable charging anything more than covering only some of the development costs.

It's a finished site, an idea that feels and looks good. But it's not anything tested. Somebody else has to do that.
