Something I don't understand about list building....

Hello all.... Quick question that has always kind of held me back from doing a lot of list building....

Let's say I am in a health related niche such as heartburn. I promote an ebook on my site and have a sign up list to get a free short report, for instance. Once the person gets the report or buys the ebook, what else can I promote to them on my list?

In other words, if the ebook is supposed to solve their problem, why would they need to keep hearing from me? Wouldn't that mean that the ebook did NOT solve their problem, and if so, why would they want to hear from me anyway? Does that make sense?

Or, let's say I am in the housewares niche and I am selling a specific set of dishes. If I have a short report about decorating, for instance, and they buy the dishes, what else am I following up on later?

I really want to build some lists (I have over 100 sites now) but I am unsure as to which sites would be best for list building and what I can offer later.....

People that want to train cats to be good are also interested in potty training cats (yes, this does work). I love online marketing

Yes absolutely, Ditto to the guy with the great name lol

You can give them anything. If you gave them a free product to control heartburn, and they like it you have created a fan. You want to have raving fans and the more great content you deliver the more responsive they will be...

You can look around the internet for CPA offers, clickbank products, anything related of good quality.

Think outside of the box, who is your exact target market, are they the older crowd, maybe they also want to know how to get rid of arthritis or maybe want to get in better shape or get a little healthier to feel better.

Maybe they need some advice on how to save money on health products...
you can literally ask them too.. Find out what they need and want and give it to them.. if you take good care of your list, they will do the same.

      Take Care,
      David R.

There are new additions, updates and news in relation to what you supplied in the ebook.

They would still love to hear about that.

    I read somewhere,

It doesn't make sense to build a list in every niche, make a list only if it provides multiple chances of monetization.

Can't recollect where I read that but I do agree with the statement.

    Hi CC,

That's a good question. And there are several good answers in this thread, such as those telling you to sell related items.

    Now here's something else...

Consumers are, well, consumers. Think about what you're interested in. Now go look at your bookshelf. Then take a peek in your closet or elsewhere to see what products you've purchased that are related to your interests. I'm guessing you've bought a boatload, right?

Take me, for example. I love dogs. My bookshelf is full of dog breed books, dog training books, and other dog books. Thing is, I don't have just ONE training book. I have a bunch. That's because I read everything on the topic that I can get my hands on.

(Then look around my house and you'll see dog collars, leashes, kennels, dishes, boots, sweaters, jackets, toys, treats, chewies... etc!)

Your prospects are the same way. If you choose a niche with ravenous customers, they'll want to get their hands on as much info and as many related products as possible. Even if they purchased one product on the niche topic, it's likely they'll purchase another.

Let's say you're targeting some niche of people who want to lose weight. You sell them a diet book, which should solve their problems. So what else can you sell them? Things like:

    Recipe books

Different diet books (e.g., maybe they hate a low-fat diet book, but they'll like the South Beach Diet).

    Diet supplements and vitamins.

    Food (think Jenny Craig).

    Exercise equipment.

    Motivational products.

Support (such as a paid forum).

    ... Things like that.

Now, let me address your specific problem:

Or, let's say I am in the housewares niche and I am selling a specific set of dishes. If I have a short report about decorating, for instance, and they buy the dishes, what else am I following up on later?
It sounds like you're focusing on a PRODUCT. Instead of focusing on a product, focus on a hungry NICHE.

See, if focus on selling a product, and you sell that one product, then you're left scrambling around looking for something else to sell. And you're not really sure what to sell, because you're not completely sure what this group of people wants.

So do it the other way.

Focus on a hungry market instead. A market that's looking for solutions. A market that's actively BUYING solutions today, right now. All you have to do to discover what these people want is to find out what they're already buying. Then create a list or other means of reaching them so that you can offer the solutions they're seeking.

So for your example, forget the dishes for just a moment. Instead, narrow your focus and find out everything you can about the PEOPLE who are buying these dishes. Ultimately, what do they want? What is their motivation for buying things like dishes?

For example, maybe you have newlyweds who are focusing on building a home together. They're gonna need a whole lot more housewares than dishes.

Or maybe you're focusing on the college student who's in her first apartment. She has a small budget. So she's looking for creative ways to make her apt look nice on this budget. You can offer her free info about how to design on a budget (with links to the products you're recommending).

    See what I mean?

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Becky

When I first started I thought of the same thing.

I couldnt figure out how I was going to entice them into signing up without giving away my 'bread and butter' so to speak.

What I did was broke down what I was selling into different categories.

With your heartburn example you might break it down into something like this:

    1. food to ease or control heartburn
    2. physical exercises
    3. supplements
    4. mental exercises

Now just pick on and find a great, and I mean awesome tip that will help them. Not completely overcome it.

So lets say you find that bananas help ease heartburn, you could offer a short report on the one food that every heartburn sufferer should be eating on a daily basis. Tell them what it does how it does it.

Just one tip. Or a few tips.

Another option is to take a chapter from your ebook and give that away free. I do that with one of my niches, I just give the introduction away!
