How do I find the right long-tail keywords?

Hello,

I am not very good at keyword research, and am trying to learn how to do it.

Say I pick a niche, dog training for example. I can go to Google's keyword research tool and enter the term, and it shows me loads of suggestions. Trouble is, most of the relevant ones are fairly short, and fairly (or very) competitive. I am looking for terms with lower search numbers, but lower competition, but can't work out how to find these efficiently.

I know I could sit there dreaming up all sorts of variations, and trying them all, but that would take all day. Is there a simple way to find long-tail keywords based on a short-tail one like dog training?

Thanks for any help you can give.

    try wordtracker

they have plans for 1000 to over 1,000,000 keyowords

since their smaller packages are under $100 It's probably one of the absolute best investments you can make in keyword research

That's the first place I go.

They have several different tools available that I use. I just found this one recently that has a pretty neat feature that shows how much competition there is for it versus the number of daily searches for it. Google Trends & Wordtracker mashup | GTrends

Also they have one that phrases it in questions: Keyword Questions – Keyword Research Tool

      Good luck.

Thanks for those links. Both are a big help towards what I'm trying to do.

+1 on Wordtracker. You'll be surprised at the keywords that it's going to give you. I think there's a trial version so you can try it first.

I would suggest add specifics to that term, and that will give you all the long tail combination, in your case, what about training for different breed, that will give you tens if not hundreds of terms, then location, again, hundreds of them..

Keep in mind that those general keywords are to help identify other related terminology within that niche.

I just did a site in the dog niche and am working on another one on cats so I am a little familiar with this topic.

So, for 'dog training' what are people wanting to accomplish? I personally ended up focusing on 'dog obedience tips' and 'obedience training for dogs'. The search competition was drastically reduced but the search counts was still high enough. This is still a very competitive area but hope that will kind of give you a better idea. Look at alternative words with the same meanings too. Use a thesaurus (sp?) to look out alternative words that might mean the same thing but just aren't as highly searched for...there are some real golden nuggets in their them hills

Yup, I can see that it's useful to get other general terms, but I was really looking to find out how to narrow it down without a lot of trial and error.

I picked that as an example, I haven't even thought of looking at that market

OK, but how did you get to those without blindly trying everything you can think of? That's what I'm trying to find out.

Although, you still have two 3-word phrases. I'm looking at longer phrases as the competition will be less. Granted the searches will be less, but I'm still learning, so looking for easier targets to start.

So you're back to blind trial and error, no? I was hoping there would be a more scientific method for rooting out long-tail keywords.

Mind you, if there were, someone would be selling a product to find them, and there woudln't be any left by now!

      Thanks for the reply.

        Here's one for you...

Go to a large bookstore (whatever the UK equivalent to Barnes & Noble or Borders), and look for books on the subject which have both a table of contents and an index. Go through both looking for ideas. You're still stuck with a bit of trial and error, but you have a good seed list.

Another way to build a seed list is to go to the website of popular magazines on the subject or subjects closely related. Scan the article titles. These are created to garner attention within the niche.

Thanks, some good ideas there. Still a bit trial and error as you say, but it does have the advantage of leveraging other people's expertise - they will have worked on those headlines carefully.

Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that one. Looks a bit daunting at first, but I'm sure it will make more sense when I've had chance to look more closely.

I did some research and finally bought Market Samurai, both because it was mac compatible and because I felt it had more options than most other products. It does just what you ask, turning a basic search into variants and analyzing them to find a good long tail. Minuses: it is not very beginner-friendly (but the new training lessons on their site made things easier) and is a bit slow.

Thanks, I'll have a look at it. I had heard of it mentioned along with Traffic Travis, and assumed they did the same. Looks like this might do more.

I'll give the free version a go and see how I get on.

Market Samurai without question especially when you're still learning as it spells it out. They also offer a trial so you can test it out against doing it manually if you want.

I have to second matts5150 suggestion on Market Samurai, it doesn't get any easier than that. Or you could head over to the Warriors For Hire and find someone to do the keyword research for you.

Try using the autocomplete in the Google search box and type every letter of the alphabet to see all the variation after your primary keyword. I find lots of great long tail keywords this way.

To piggyback on John's magazine suggestion, go to ezine articles and other article directories and do a search on your topic and just start reading. There should be plenty of longtail keywords in those articles... Well, at least in the good ones. Good luck.

Google keyword search tool has all the details needed. The tool gives the count of searches, the percentage of competition. After that keyword search you can optimized the keyword that has high searches and low competition.

I wouldn't say that Google Keyword Tool is a good solution to look for LTK. Try to use a Wordtracker.Don't be mislead using the free version. From my own experience it has nothing in common with a paid program. Free version doesn't crawl all the Search Engines and provides the number of searches much lower than it really is. When you are ready to go ahead with some project just buy Wordtracker for the shortest period possible. I remember it was 1 day for about $10. Now I am not sure. If it provides only monthly subscription, try to prepare several projects and make keyword research in this 1 month period. Try Free Trial of Market Samurai. There are some good keyword research programs that have a Free Trial.Make a search online.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

I've just been playing with Market Samurai, and it does look very powerful. I'm still not finding any decent keywords, but I've only been at it for an hour or so! Seems every decent keyword has loads of competition!

I'm also a bit confused by the discrepancy between the results I see in MS and Traffic Travis, and what I see in Google. TT doesn't show YouTube videos in the top ten results whereas MS does, but MS shows a much higher number of backlinks to the domain than TT does.

Anyone able to shed any light on this? Thanks again

If you are looking at the usual niches like dog training, make money, weight loss, & get your ex back my experience has been disappointing. I use Micro Niche Finder and have not found many long term keywords with any decent competition.

I have made somewhat decent money over the last seven months in smaller niches I found by focusing on Clickbank products with lower gravity, but the amount of writing compared to the return has been daunting.

I see you are a War Room member & I just recently joined and am placing my focus on the thread about "Flopping websites." This is where you are building as many adsense sites as you can, keeping the top performers and flipping the others on Flippa for 8-15X their monthly revenue. The same amount of writing can make you steady income instead of hit miss commissions and if your site is a loser you sell it & move on.

Using micro niche finder I can find so many tiny micro niches that it is hard to use them all. There is a video posted by Fthomas in the War Room about how to use MNF to find valuable adsense niches. I had used it to make a little money article marketing but after watching his video yesterday I really found some valuable niches where people are paying $10-$25 a click for adwords ads.

    Best Regards,

    Andy
