Does Anyone Still Have a Day Job?

Just wondering if anyone on here still has a day job.

I personally last had a job back in March 2007 working for a tech startup. Haven't had a day job since.

Do you still have a job? What do you do?

I'm an Ironworker for local 512.

The benefits are pretty good, but the body sure takes a beating.

I just got a layoff a month ago for the first time in my life. It's tough out there also...

I'm glad I had some IM going for a while before that.

I've worked for myself since 1999. Before that I designed websites for a local company. I had my own part-time business going when the company I worked for went out of business, so I just transitioned to full-time online.

Yes I am a software developer. I think many people here will still have a day job, since that is what you need until you are earning good money online, unless you can still live cheaply with relatives or off your spouse for example.

Ditto what theemperor said... I too am paid for writing code and related activities. But... product launch in 2010 will change that. But I need to make real money before quitting day job -- hubby would not handle the stress well of losing our medical and steady paycheck as his income is less predictable.

I teach martial arts for a living which is a passion I love so I've absolutely no intention of quitting.

Got into internet marketing a few years ago through MLM when I was in a job I hated. So back then it was a 'way out'. Now I really enjoy it, learn a lot from it that can be applied to marketing my day job and helps supplement my income.

Goal is to equal my career income online to make things a bit more comfortable and maybe let my girlfriend quit her job.

Do not be distracted by inconsequential things. There's really no time for such petty trivialities. The enormous flood of great information and wisdom presented in this forum is enough to keep our minds busy till eternity.

Working 8+ hours a day, then coming home doing all the online work you need to do,while trying to fit some family time in there as well. I have come up with a schedule for myself which I have a certain time for online things and certain time for family things.Hopefully this will help me get more value out of my time to get things done.

I also work with IM for my day job a lot of the time at work. I have started an educational website with opt-ins for free information and trading platforms...this helps tremendously with getting prospects for business.

I absolutely loathe my job and its my hate of my job that keeps me going with IM. Given the state of the economy and how many people don't have job, I know I should be grateful, but there are few things worse than waking up everyday to go to a job you hate. Life is just too short.

I for one still have my day job, which I love, and won't be giving it up anytime soon. Im an NYC social butterfly and the idea of sitting at home or in a coffee shop or wherever trapped behind the computer all day with no social contact seems like a complete buzzkill. Im a marketing strategist and I've telecommuted before for work. I used to think that was the most ideal situation. Working from home was the dream. That was until I actually had to do it. And I'm glad I got the chance to because I learned that working from home is just not for me. I love getting up in the morning and throwing on something stylish and heading out into NYC. All the people, the women (the most beautiful and stylish anywhere in the US), the networking, learning and utilizing my prestigious college degree that I paid so much for, hitting the town after work.....I love it. Everybody is different, but working at my day job works for me.

Of course there are mornings when I wish I didn't have to get up and go in but that's not the overwhelming majority. IM is also so much fun and provides a great supplemental income.....it's great to apply new skills that i've learned as well as having money for the extras in NYC that cost so friggin much....like general entertainment. (4 people seeing Avatar at the theater was almost $100) So having extra money from IM to cover things like that is awesome.

So whether you do have a day job or ya dont, stick with whatever works for you and your lifestyle.

      Happy New Year everyone,

      Cheers

        Yup.

I was freelance producer, and quit that to take a job running the bookmobile program, because I thought that perhaps insurance would be a good idea. Which, seeing as I was diagnosed as a diabetic a few years ago, was a positively prescient move on my part.

So I still do that, although I'm switching to part time this year. I make more (a lot more) from my writing work and online stuff, but I have severe doubts about my ability to even get other insurance, much less pay for it, so I'm sticking with it.

Fortunately, I like my job, so I'm okay with it.

Oh yes, I'm a radio broadcasting guy; do a morning show on a 100kw country FM, and am operations manager for our 14-station company. I'm also in charge of production (writing and producing the commercials), and have won quite a few awards for that. I love what I do, it's a labor of love, and I'm ready to get out...25 years is long enough, apparently.

Now that I'm starting to get into IM seriously, I've realized two things:

1 - If I can't leverage my experience into success online, I need to just give up and open a Snow Cone stand.

      2- I don't know CRAP about writing TRULY effective copy...or, at least I DIDN'T.

        Sigh.....

Yeah unfortunately I still work for the man. I've always despised having a boss control how much I earn and when I work.

Ever since my final days in the US Navy I have been looking to be in business for myself.

I've had some crappy jobs, some I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy but currently I am a field service engineer for Schneider Electric. Money is good, which is why I stay with it. It enables me to live pretty well and fund my online venture as.

Still, the best day of my life will be saying bye bye to working for a boss. Second best day was leaving the military.

I still work for the man, but unfortunately I'm the man ...

I'm vp of development and chief bottle washer for a small company that sells an enterprise software package I helped developed. Me and a former boss at Nortel started the company in 2000 part time. He went full time in 2003 and I went full time in 2004. We pay our bills but I'm tired of development and want to get into marketing.

The only issue with my day job is the benefits. as a small company and as a person with some health issues its not cost effective to provide benies. Fortunately at this time my wife works and gets some great benefits. But in this economy you can never tell how long that will last.

I left the day job scene at the end of 2004 to take up internet marketing as a living, crust, business whatever you want to call it. Like some jobs / careers etc, internet marketing is more a lifestyle than anything else. The road has not been easy but it has been extremely rewarding in many ways. Taking the plunge and totally ditching the day job is not for everyone - and definitely not for the faint hearted even if you do think you have the financial backup to ride the storms. It's just the way I wanted to do it - all or nothing I suppose...The hardest part has been keeping a balance of life / family / business while working from home - it's a great journey though!

I haven't worked for someone else since 1999 (self-employed, online based biz), except for a couple intervals where I helped out friends. I worked as a DJ at a bar for a few months, and also as a project manager for a short period at my friend's design company when he was swamped and under-staffed.

I prefer working from my home office, and it's awesome, but sometimes I miss the camaraderie of working with people in the "real world". Wouldn't trade it though.

  • IM Full Time plus University student. The University part is for my dad... to show him I can graduate with top standards. Only 2 years to go but I'm loving it.

Always had an imagination and passion for earning money, at 10 I sold drinks on my street and sweets + fizzy drinks at car-boot sales. Some car-boot sales I made between 50-100 quid, and we did them every week so I was making a good 400 odd quid in the car-boot season.

Later sold cigarettes to kids whos parents didn't allow them to smoke... I know it's bad but the idea was to make money, funny enough that made me 10-20 quid mon to fri for most of the year.

Between 14-16 I had 3 paper rounds I did every day and then from the age of 16-19 I entered the professional gaming arena, got contracted under a Esports Team and made 10-20 k per year depending on tournament winnings, got voted top 5 player in the world and best team in Europe + appearing in several live tv shows across different countries. Sponsorship from LG and Intel was a treat, free flights, hotel and free products

I knew big money was possible through the internet so from 19 to now 21, I've been in MLM, when I found it I fell inlove with the idea straight off, when the result = money I find anything enjoyable.

I work as a medic for our local children's hospital neonatal / pediatric critical care transport team. Our team treats and cares for critically ill infants and children that are being cared for at hospitals that are not equipped to handle such situations and we transport them to hospitals with more advanced level of care. I have been doing this job for eleven years and love every minute of it. The pay is not the greatest but emotional benefits are the best. Words can not express how it feels when you are able to help a patient in need or put a smile on a parents face. This is why I continue working 12+ hours x 4 days week. During the holidays I play Santa and fly in on the helicopter and bring Christmas to children that are not able to make it home for the holidays.. Gifts are donated by the community. One goal I have is to use IM profits to expand this offering by giving these children multiple gifts each. Currently we are only able to provide 1-2 small gifts to each child. I am looking forward to the day when we will need to have multiple helicopters flying in with bags and bags of gifts for these children.. Some are sick and will never make it home. At least I along with my co-workers can put a huge smile on their face on this special day..

Yes , I have a daytime / nighttime job and I love it... When the day comes where my online IM career takes off it will be GREAT. I will be able to bring my wife home from the workforce , and I will be able to fulfil my goals of doing wonderful deeds for my patients and their families and other entrepreneurs wanting to grow a successful business. I want to show my children that helping others will take them further in their lives than they will ever realize.

    Thanks,

God yes. I manage a small kitchen in a dive bar in a college town...and it sucks. I make about $250 a week which works out to a measly 9 bucks an hour for dealing with drunk, obnoxious college kids, lazy employees and inventory management. I make slightly more than that online, but I guess I'm just waiting until I break into that second tier of online marketing before I quit my job.

I like the security (minuscule as it is) of the job, and the owner and I have become pretty good friends. The plan is to make enough money online to invest in my own offline brick and mortar business with him and combine that with my own online marketing income...hopefully this will be doable within the next year.

In fact, if I'm still in this same job a year from now I'll gladly pay a Warrior a few thousand bucks to kill me hahaha.

I went full time with my offline home business 8 years ago and hated it. Kept going to the shop for somebody to talk to so after 2 months I got a full time job in a shop. Now I'm the number 3 in a small supermarket.

My business is now online and I plan to ease off with the day job and cut back my hours later this year. Can't see me giving it up completely because I would get bored if I wasn't working with others. The job is interesting, challenging and hard work.

Today was bad as half the staff didn't turn up because of the snow. I was running the shop and had to sort everything out. We ran out of bread and milk very quickly because people were panic buying, so the customers who came after were complaining. Salt and dishwasher salt became a distant memory once the snow started falling before Christmas, so more complaining. The shop floor was constantly wet and I was worried in case anybody slipped.

A massive delivery about 3 times bigger than normal arrived an hour before I was due to go home. The storeroom was packed, I had to put about a dozen delivery cages in the shop too and leave some out in the back yard. I ended up staying over 2 hours extra to help out. It was tiring but I came home satisfied that we had done well considering the problems.

Another Wednesday not too long ago we had an armed robbery at lunchtime when dozens of kids from the local school were in - I was running the shop then too. My luck I think, power cuts always seem to happen on my shifts or the freezers going down.

Despite all that I enjoy the job and the nice things that happen. Like the little boy who gives me a hug very time he comes in. The lady who scowled at everybody for months and last week I helped her pack her shopping and took it out to the taxi and got her chattng. Today as I was going she smiled and chatted voluntarily, that was one heck of a breakthrough.

I never know what is going to happen from one day to the next so I never get bored.

Yup, I'm a product development chemist, but I want to get more into the central business functions.

I actually found IM and started getting involved in copywriting to get marketing experience to bolster my corporate career goals. I still want that product manager/market manager job that was my original goal because I believe that making better stuff in better ways is important.

But when my side businesses get to the point that they take up more time and require lots of outsourcing it's going to be awfully tempting to just leave for a while.

Of course, that "when" is currently me being positive. I made less than $100 last year and haven't actually received any of it due to payment limits. But it was my first year trying and I was only slowly developing focus. So I'm looking forward to more action in 2010.

I started my career as an RN and started doing pretty well online in about the same month, and now I do both. My day job is pretty nice, great pay and benefits, low stress work, security. Of course, I was needing either one to support myself in the other, but now they co-exist pretty well with my employees that help me online and I make more than my directors and some of the administration.

Sometimes I feel its unfortunate that I had to spend so much time, money, and effort to get myself into a career that only 6 months of building my online education and experience in reselling physical products from China has managed to surpass my actual income earned through my paid education. If only I had started when I was a teenager or something.

I'm fairly new to IM as an out-and-out career choice, although I've been doing variations on the theme for a few years. My "Day job", such as it is/was, has involved a lot of consulting for various enterprises, from an aussie makeup company that basically wanted a better return on it's (semi-)bl@ckh@t campaigns, right up to HM Home Office and the NHS, who wanted some muscle behind their supposed modernisation of information-sharing services, which was never going to materialise but kept the press happy for a few months in the off-season.
I'm pretty much jacking that in completely, if i don't get a good offer soonish that'd trump IM money (over £1000/day and i'm back with them, less and i'm not), so I'm hanging round this and about another 8 forums as a complete n00b (ish) to figure out how these things work.
I've got a bit of a plan involving selling homeopathic "medicine" (water) to the NHS, but way short of the necessary capital yet

    Still plugging along.

Lucky me!I am still home taking care of my 3 year old son.I work full time with marketing my sites when my kid is in the kindergarden.
Before i had my son i was employed in a God D... factory to build plogs for tractors.
    How Cool is That?
I probably lifted around 15 tons of iron in my 8 hours workday.

I will never go back and i have found my passion with doing affiliate marketing and creating ebooks.

I have two kids - 9 and 5 y.o. I also love the flexibility of working from home and being able to take my kids to all sorts of kid activities during the day.

The last full time job I had was working from home as a technical adviser for sky broad band customers. I am now a stay at home carer for my partially disabled wife. This does mean I get more time online to try and make it in IM though.

Sort of? Right now I'm making very little money online, though I'm working on changing that again. My main line of work is as a classical musician, though. Pianist and composer, though I'm not sure if you want to call it a day job? It surely beats office work, in my opinion!

    Haven't had a "real job" since 2001.

I don't think I could work for anyone else now. Would likely tell them to stuff it when they told me to do something I didn't want to do.

No day job since 2006! When I think about it now, I can't imagine working for someone else.

I realize that is the normal way of life, but once you work for yourself it is VERY hard to think about going back! Setting your own schedule and not answering to a boss is really nice.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we had really bad ice here. My husband, jokingly, said I would have to leave early for work in the morning (due to slick roads). I laughed, and told him "Yeah, it's a long walk to that computer chair"!

I can tell anyone one this forum, give it your best effort, focus, and motivation, and you CAN do it

I have been laid off from doing civil engineering for a year now. I finally have tasted the IM life and I am sure I will not need to go back to full time work by tripling the efforts I have made just in the last 6 months.

Unfortunatley yes. My passion used to be computers and networking, but I have mastered all of that and now I am bored. IM is a new challenge for me and I wish I could do it full time, but I can't because I'm busy running an IT Department and I have a family with two kids. So, time is really short and I can't dedicate as much to IM as I want to, but I guess life could be worse...lol

I sweep and mop floors during the day right now but I used to work full time as a writer... before that I had a job in a bar band.. That was the only job I had where nobody seemed to mind that I was drinking on the job constantly.

Yeah, I'm currently unemployed also but that's really a misnomer since all I do is sit at my computer attempting to make IM actually produce money for me LOL and FINALLY I've found the "ticket"!!! (Clue: See my signature)

I worked as a marketing agent in a real estate company and also a broker that I can earn commission for every unit sold. But in the internet jobs, I do this part time.
