SEO Question: Ranking with www & without it...What do I do?

Just realized that I'm ranking with and without the www prefix. Kinda sucks. I bet the big "G" is all confused and not ranking my site well.

Anyone have an opinion about what I should do? Without totally killing my indexed pages?

You need to create a 301 redirect in your htaccess file that directs the non www links to the www address. That way all your incoming link juice will go to the www address. You only need to do this for your basic domain name, you don't need to do it for each page.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

All my sites are mysite.com (no www).

It doesn't affect your rankings either way. I just find it looks cleaner without the www.

Every now and then links will be made to www.mysite.com even though my ranking site is mysite.com.

I do this to easily fix this problem:

It doesn't actually matter if you go with or without, as long as you only go for the one. I personally prefer without, but I know there are tons of people out there that don't even realize you can leave it off.

You have a number of different options: the most modern would be to put canonical relationship tags on your pages. You could also do redirects, etc. As long as whichever way you move away from still results in people landing on a page, you should be fine.

I suppose this would be the same as having a link include http:// or not?

You should also get a free Google Webmaster account, which will allow you to click an option to index the www or the non www when you set up your account.
