Protecting Digital Downloads - How Does This Idea Sound...

All right guys...

We've had a growing concern here lately about the safety of digital downloads; I won't cite any specifics, but unfortunately, if you have a digital product, someone who's determined to get it for free will get it for free. While we can't completely nullify that chance, we CAN cut down on it.

I had an idea earlier this morning, but since it was before I drank my morning coffee I'm wondering how good it actually is > In any case, I'm running it by here, to see if it's workable or too much a pain in the ass.

In this example, we'll use a WSO.

You post your WSO and give a Paypal link. When the customer buys, though, instead of the program itself emailed to them, they get a password, plus a download link. That download link can only be accessed once (so if 100 people buy, there are 100 different download links).

And then, since certain individuals will surely want to upload to their own server to pass around, you attach a tracking link into the file itself.

Sound like something that could work, or sound like too much hassle to the buyer and may cut down on sales?

The tracking will be a good idea. The rest you mentioned can already be done with Delavo.

Sounds like it would work, Although I don't like too make people jump though another hoop to download the thing they just bought. I use Download Guard, and I have great results with that. You could use expiring download links. Give them something like 24 hours to download the link then the link will expire.

They'll still upload and claim their computer was "hacked". Not worth your time.

For the first part of the question: scripts like DLGuard, RAP, $7Script (and probably many more) already do it. They create a unique and expiring download link.

As for the "tracking"... I agree with BlueSquares

Just invest in any one of the multiple products already created and sold by Warriors that have addressed this problem quite well for several years already... done and done.

I use e-junkie for this... and use their PDF stamping feature in addition to the time limited and download limited links.

btw, there is currently a discount coupon for 120 days free with them... just search for it.

But make sure that your customers know that they will get something by buying from you, that they could NEVER get from simply dl-ing off of a 'free' site.
