A not-so-newbie question on Pinging

Hi!

I still don't understand the concept of pinging. How does it work and what are the benefits?

Also, when I do pinging for my blog, does it mean that my blog contents will be shared with other blogs? Can I do it for my lenses, weebly and articles too?

Can I do pinging everyday and which pinging tools will you recommend me to use?

Pls help me to understand.

Thanks

I know that the major reason why you need to ping your blogs is to let the weblog tracking sites or search engines know that your blog has been updated. So, it is important that you ping your blog each time you add fresh content to it.

I also know that pinging can be done as many times as you send fresh content to your blog. So, if you add new content to your blog daily, ping daily...If you add fresh content weekly, ping weekly...If you add fresh content hourly, ping hourly.

Pinging tools? Pingomatic.com does the magic. Pingoat.com is also active. Meanwhile, WordPress and Blogger have inbuilt automated pinging tool that pings your blog automatically as soon as you publish fresh content on your blog.

    Benefits of Pinging

    1. It generates more traffic and/or brings more visitors to your blog.
    2. Your blog gets listed in the search engines faster.

Can YOU ping (squidoo) lenses, articles...? I I don't think so.

Can I use both Pingomatic.com & Pingoat.com together? or I should use only one of them?

I thought I read somewhere here, unfortunately I did not bookmark, that you can ping your articles too.

    Why don't you think so?

    Thanks

You can use both of them.

It depends on what you mean by articles. Articles can be posts in some contexts.

For example, some posts in this forum are articles. So, blog posts can also be articles.

I use pingler. It has 91 blog/weblog directories that it pings to, but these are mainly made up of google directories in different countries. It also has the 13 sites on pingomatic included at Pingler.

As mentioned you should ping every time you have fresh content and you can ping anything that has a web address or rss feed. So you can ping articles, blogs, squidoo lenses, hubs, forum posts, profile pages, social bookmarks, youtube videos, etc.

You can use numerous sites to ping the same web page. The more directories you can ping to, the better i guess. I mainly use pingler, but also pingomatic, pingoat and pingmyblog.

I have also noticed that pingler and pingomatic show up as backlinks when checking in Yahoo Site explorer. They're both fairly decent PR sites, so there's 2 easy backlinks straight away!

As for the concept of pinging - it notifies the directories you are pinging to, that you have new content, but you must remember that 1000's of people are doing the same thing everyday. It will also notify the search engines that you have fresh content. The more often you add content and the more often you ping, the better chance you have of visitors, backlinks and evenually sales, i guess!

I can sometimes spend at least an hour a day pinging! Other people use plug-ins, automated pinging tools and i'm pretty sure you could probably hire a virtual assistant for an hour a day at low cost to ping thousands of web pages for you if you wished!

Ok..That means for the articles that are already published in the article directories like EZA, I can ping it only once unless if I make changes to it. Am I right?

I can understand now that pinging is like notifying the directories for every time I add fresh contents to my blog but I have a question...

Do pingler, pingomatic, pingoat and pingmyblog share the same directories? If they share the same, what is the worst scenario that can happen to my site? Will my site be blacklisted by Google?

Thank you for your explanation..half of my battle for this pinging thing is solved...

You can ping anything. This is an exceptional little script Tom Brite posted a while back -

    ping = notify

by pinging your blog, you tell the search engine, or the indexing service that you have made some changes to your content.. and they need to update their database on your content..

it is originated from concept of Unix command "ping" to test remote host is alive or not..

then do you play "ping-pong"?? the same ping.

Kitty Kiki You can ping Squidoo lens and articles. Most people ping their blogs, but you can ping your website or any site each time you add new content.

Val S. I use Pingler because it pings 91 sites at one time. It is just a way to let the SE's know I have added content to my site so they will check the site. It gets the SE's to your site faster so you can get your site indexed quicker.

New content doesn't simply mean adding more words to the page. You could still add backlinks to your "old" article. Search engines will recognize new backlinks and this can help that forgotten article rise in rankings. So if you are backlinking, social bookmarking or refering in a forum post to a certain page, then ping that page each time you do this.

As for "over-pinging", there are websites that have thousands of new articles published on them everyday and therefore they send thousands, if not millions, of pings a day. So i don't think you or me pinging an extra 10-20 times a day will make that much difference.

The thing is the search engines will always eventually find your content, even if it is ranked at number 2,344,988!! Pinging just alerts directories and search engines to your content! Therefore, i would rather spend one hour writing articles, completing keyword research or researching a new niche than pinging! But that's just me!

      Cheers
