Reputable domain checking services?

I've heard that many domain registrars take the names that were checked but not reserved immediately and register them themselves.

I would like to compile a small list of registrars who are known never to do that.

Who belongs on the list of registrars who don't do that?

Thanks,
Marcia Yudkin

I'm asking for a list of the REPUTABLE places, not the ones not to use. I already know who some of the bad guys are.

      Thanks,

The way to avoid "domain tasting" by the registrar is not
run your searches through the registrar, but through Google
or other search engine. When you've got a short list of
the domains you'd like to have, then go to the registrar
and move forward with intent to buy.

Other than that I've read that Domain Registration - The Cheap and Easy Way | 000domains.com
does not taste domains—recommended by Paul Myers
I believe. That was at least a year ago I think so I
cannot say their practices are still the same.

I have heard of this practice a little too late when I was looking for a domain name and lost a brilliant one to it..shame

I also would like to know of some that do not do it.

Three registrars I am absolutely confident with are:

    Moniker
    Namecheap
Fabulous (you need a portfolio of at least 50 quality domains)

I've been registering domain names on a daily basis for years, and these three have never once touched my domain ideas.

Quite a rather mean thing to say to Go Daddy users who otherwise haven't
had any issues with them or you so far, don't you think? Then again, that is
        your opinion.

Anyway, I too vouch for Moniker and NameCheap's respective CEOs making
online statements of not taking domains after searched upon. Go Daddy and
Network Solutions (though not their CEOs) also made the same claims, even
though the latter made quite a stir about that a few years back.

As an FYI, Network Solutions stopped that "front running" practice years ago
and settled their suit about it. Just search online about that.

Rather than search through a registrar, you can check with the same source
all of them course through for .com:

VeriSign WHOIS - Domain Name Lookup from VeriSign, Inc.

Happy domain searching...and registering on the spot.

I used to have GoDaddy, IMHO the worst Registrar EVAR. I had several instances where I used their service to check a name only to go back hours later and GoDaddy had it up for SALE. 2 in one day, give me a break.

I waited one week and guess what happened, they were available again. Coincidence???

If you want to learn how to UPsell, they are the Kings of Upsells. Nobody does it better than GoDaddy.

I know so many people that have been screwed over by GoDaddy it's not even funny.

Are you saying Godaddy bought the domain and a week later it was dropped and back on the market?? Or are you saying that they pretended to buy it just to re-sell to you at a higher price?

Godaddy has not given me any trouble *knock on wood. I actually started using them because I had so much trouble with other registrars. Trying to get domain whois updated, renew, etc. It was ridiculous. I really have not had any real issues with Godaddy like I have with so many other companies. They actually seem pretty on the ball with the whole domain business to be honest.

Are you sure that you aren't just unaware of how domains work though? Possibly a little naive? I have a client that lost her domain because she didn't renew it. She was notified by Godaddy, and myself, warning her that she needed to renew the domain. The domain ended up going in auction for a few thousand dollars, and I told her the entire time to end the auction for the $80 appeal fee. She made absolutely no sense, and didn't renew the domain. It wasn't until I sent a huge e-mail explaining how domains work that she did anything about it. A week later she was trying to get advice on how to sue Godaddy.

Now other's might have a more legit reason to be upset with Godaddy, but you don't even know how often I see non issues like this being treated like there is some sort of conspiracy. Godaddy has how many domains registered daily? How many are in auction right now? They were supposed to call/mail that many people because they were too stupid to realize they need to pay for their domain? We don't really own these things. It's more like renting. It's our responsibility to make sure nothing goes wrong. At the end of the day, does any company really care about you? I don't think so.

I type the intended URL straight into my browser, if the page comes up saying "incorrect web address" the name is nearly always available, and with no tracking !

I have over 100 domains and have never had Godaddy steal one on me before registration? I've always thought that it was possible and was very cautious at first, but that was years ago, and over time I wasn't so paranoid & stopped worrying about it. Am I just lucky? Do they actually do this?

For my purposes, this procedure does not work, because it's necessary to know which domains are available separately from reserving them, but I can see why it might be suitable for other people's situations.

I type the intended URL straight into my browser, if the page comes up saying "incorrect web address" the name is nearly always available.
This also is unsatisfactory where it's necessary to know whether or not the domain CAN be registered.

So if people have other reliable domain checkers to suggest, please do so.

Thank you for the suggestions so far.

I have used both Dotster (Dotster) and www.123-reg.co.uk for years and never had this issue with either of them.

    Hello Marcia,

I have had good service without any problems from Moniker and Namecheap.

I recommend either and they offer free privacy of your domain.

You are kidding me. I have never heard of such despicable business practices. It is a deplorable act to filch the creativity of others and use it as your own.

I like namecheap but...no phone support....although they do have chat. Haven't noticed any problems with them swiping my search results.

I left Godaddy for Namecheap when my domains came up for renewal recently on the advice of other warriors. I have a portfolio of 50+ domains and am always going back and registering domains I checked a couple days earlier and have never seen them take one.

Haven't tried their phone service but found their chat support OK. I think they chat to many people at once so they can leave you hanging for a while sometimes.
