Don't let distractions kill your dreams

Family and friends all mean well but they can really get you off track. How many times have you been working on something and a spouse views it as "Playing on the Computer" then comes to chat, or worse, assigns you a task to get done?

How many times have you looked forward to that weekend to work on your product only to find you must go to a wedding or a family thing?

Have your buddies ever gone to do something "fun" and begged you to go even though you really know you should get your marketing going?

I'm not saying go without fun or family, but too many times you have to be the one to set the rules and tell them of your work schedule. Its easier if you have a set time to work and everyone knows you are "unavailable".

Good call Scott. I'll be dealing with this when I go full time IM in April. Not sure how it'll shake out yet...I have two kids, 2 & 5. But no matter what, there will definitely have to be a separate room and "work hours" for mom!

Luckily, my girl already knows what all this is about and understands all the time I spend on the computer and what it means for the future. I got really lucky that way.

She does on occasion ask me to go and get some food, or a drink, or something from the store, and I usually oblige without any argument whatsoever. Mainly cause she only asks when she realizes I've been working or something for a few hours and haven't had a break yet.

Support group is supportive! And likes to make sure I'm healthy and not staring at a screen all day.

Not too long ago my father was asking if I wanted him to get me in as a vending machine filler LOL. I was a bit shocked and said nooo I don't think so lol. I had to explain in more detail what I do to everyone and now they all want a peice of it!

I finally convinced most of my family I am "working" when I'm on the computer, and just when they begin to leave me the heck alone so I can get something done, I stopped working (as much) and started playing video games. lol

Now, my oldest says, "Mom, are you working or playing that retarded game again?" or "I thought you were supposed to be working?"

Another funny twist: my mom was my staunchest supporter for years. Then about a week ago, I was telling her if I'd had my camera with me in town, I could have went home with several hundred dollars in my pocket.

She asked how, I told her ... and she said, "It's just another scheme." (GASP!) It was legitimate! I was planning to offer local businesses a listing on my website! Grief. Can't win for losing sometimes, I guess.

This is one of my ongoing "battles" in life. LOL I try hard to keep in mind that my family and friends don't do it on purpose, and most of them are understanding if I tell them I have to get this project done, just give me another hour or two. But if they see me there they are just too darn tempted to talk to me, share something funny (that I really couldn't care less about at the moment while I'm trying to concentrate)....

You have to walk a fine line between being available and unavailable at times, without being rude about it. Headphones and earplugs work well to cut out background noise from other people in the house but they don't work so well if someone is determined to get your attention!
