Embedding a .MOV video

Hello warriors,

I record my videos with Screenflow (a Mac screen-recording software) which outputs the videos on the standard .MOV format.

However, when I embed it on my website, some Windows users are reporting problems because they dont have QuickTime installed on their computers.

Is there any way to make a .MOV file viewable for everyone like with .FLV format?

TIA!

Never embed it strait... quicktime does not have that much market share as you are discovering.

Always use a flash based player... Flash has the widest market share of just about any software.

    You have a couple choices...

    1. If your mov is encoded with h.264 codec you can use a flash 10+ compatible player like Transparent Player that supports h.264 encoded mov video playback to embed the video in your site.

    or

    2. You can encode the video from mov to flv and use any one of many flash based video players that support flv playback including Transparent Player.

  • Hello Josh,

Thanks for the reply. I am a customer of yours for your Trigger Player (I like it very much).

Quick question: could you tell me how could I know whether my .MOV videos are encoded with H.264 codec? I have no idea what that might be to be honest. I simply record them using the custom preferences on Screenflow.

    Thanks!

Unfortunately Trigger Player was developed in an older version of flash so it does not support the h.264 codec like Transparent Player does because it has been developed to support the new codec and file formats that Flashplayer 10+ does.

For discovering what codec your video is encoded in I love this free tool:

      MediaInfo

I use it regularly... just drag and drop your video file onto it and it will tell you the audio and video codecs used bit rate etc.

If your video says h.264 or aac it will work with flashplayer 10+ compatible players that support mov playback in addition to h.264 encoded mp4 and all flv codecs.

I had a site once where I simply told Windows users to get Quicktime or go without and I never had one single complaint. These were paying customers too, not freeloaders, so if they would have had a problem I think they would have told me.

In any event, you'll want to convert the movies to flash (I think Leawo is free), then to embed and host them you might want to look at Screencast.com.
