What do your Philippino VA's do for you?

Hey

I'm just looking into getting a Philippino VA and I'm looking at how many hours I need one for.

My business is growing fast and I know in time I will need full time VA's doing 40 hour weeks but right now my primary task for one is my support / emails and a few smaller tasks which probably needs 15 hours per week.

However I know there is more I could utilise a VA for but I'm just wondering what you guys have VA's working on?

Any tips greatly appreciated

Thanks

Dean

I think the 'thing' with Filipino VA's is that they work quite cheaply (as opposed to employing someone from USA / UK) and can be found relatively easily on odesk and other such sites. It is the people based in the Philippine Isles that do this, as the income expectation is lower there.

I'm sure you could create a jobsite for people from the Philippines, there are quite a few that aready have.

I see. That is, I think, awesome. I lived in the Philippines for two years and found that many of my peoples would love a better opportunity. Now I am even more excited in bringing up a business!!

I use 2 Philippino VA for my business.

One full time link builder and one article writer.

They are very hard workers(at least my 2 guys are).

Compared to Indian outsourcers I feel like they are slightly better educated and have a better command of English.

Again, this varies from VA to VA, but im willing to put my bet on the Philippino outsourcers if I had to.

Considering the rate which is like $350/m for a FT worker, they do an excellent job.

      Hi,

I love my VA's because my life has become so much easier since i began using them 4 months ago.

I learn a task and outsource it immediately. I support them as long as needed, and then move on to the next task, learn it, outsource it, support then move on.

After 2 weeks of outsourcing i had the privlige of asking myself "Chris what do you want to work on, and can i outsource the rest?"

My VA's then began planning my holidays, booking cars, accom, researching activities. As well as business tasks - Domain research and purchase, hosting setup, keyword research. Outsource to my techies, outsource to my writers with direct response examples they have found on the net. Research and make lists of prospective customers. Send intro letters to prospective customers. On-page and off-page seo....

So yeah, quite a bit. The real bonus for me though is that i can't stuff around perfecting things. My staff are waiting for instruction, which means i have to stay infront of them, leaving no time to dwell on previously completed tasks.

Hiring may take time though. I hire 4 at a time on a 3-5 hour trial. I try not to let them know they are competeing against others. Usually I ask them to do an "urgent" (but it's not) researching task, trawling for prospects etc. I don't always get one that i like due to poor english, unable to follow instructions, slow, or poor work ethic. If I don't like them than i do a re-trial. I use odesk. if you are new rate them all highly and tell them you expect high kudos back.

      VA's i use philipinos $3-5. Techie's indian $9-12. Writers Europeans $20-30.

I like odesk because it gives me a screen shot of their computer about 3 times an hour. So they only log the hours they actually worked.

I know of two people with P.I. workers.

One has seven full time employees... he started with one and so on.
They build websites, write articles, write copy, SEO... you name it, they do it.
Of course he trained them up from camtasia videos etc... and held their hands until they were competent.
Now they train themselves. I believe he pays them well.
bestjobs.com is a good place to look for employees. $400/month is what you can expect to pay.

    Hope that helps any.

I was on Odesk again today interviewing people for SEO. Anyway, for ideas about what people use a VA for go and have a look at Browse Jobs on the Largest Marketplace for Freelancers & Programmers - oDesk if this link doesn't work, just for to odesk and click on the drop down "find provders and jobs" and click on find jobs. It's a great education.....

Couple of other things to consider. Nearly all providers will apply for your job with a generic application, this is unavoidable. I generally progress the better ones to an "interview" 15-20 at a time. In this interview I give the interviewees a specific set of questions to answer. This gives me an idea of their english ability, and level of knowledge. Only after successfuly completeing my questions do i bother with their CV, work history etc. Otherwise you'll spend hours reading cv's that say the same things, give examples of sites that don't exist, or are the same as everyone elses.
Always be specific with times. Their work ethic varies substantially. Give them deadlines. Ask when they will work for you, and for how many hours. (many juggle jobs).
Back to hiring for me...... best of luck brother

I've been a freelancer until last December and here's what
I did for my last employer..

    1. News post
    2. Blog post
    3. Transcription
    4. Web 2.0 properties creation

You'll find that certain Filipinos are hard working and loyal.
They won't copy and steal your trade secrets.

They'll even give you a lot of respect even after the work
    is done.

However, like everywhere else, there will also be rotten
tomatoes, so the best thing to do is to test them before
you hire them. If they show enough initiative and are
pleasant to communicate with, then you might have
    yourself a winner..

Also make sure to communicate with them. You don't have
to do it daily. At least once a week. Give them clear instructions
and don't expect them to read your mind..They are freelancers
    not psychics.

I also just want to make some recommendations. Even though
a lot of us here are not charging much (there are VA's
you can get for as low as $300 per month) please do take
care of your Filipino VA's or freelancers. Otherwise they could
get burnt-out. However, IMHO I can proudly say that most of the time
    Filipino freelancers deliver..

    All the best,
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1614585].message }}

You guys seem to have quite a command of English. Where do I find VAs like you? :-p

Seriously, I've hired freelancers before, and many of them have terrible English speaking and writing skills, which makes communicating tasks, ideas, etc. very hard. I will say that they are better than Indians (who make excellent, efficient tech workers if you give them precise parameters).

        Hello Palomino,

Two of the most popular places to find exceptional Filipino VA's with good command of the English language are www. Bestjobs.ph and Hire a Filipino Virtual Assistant - Outsourcing to the Philippines | Home.

However, you should not be impressed right away with their resumes because some of them are just copied from their friends or someone did that resumes for their friends who are basically newbies.

Like the usual thing, you should send emails to quite a number of these potential Filipino workers and then you take it from there. Use your best judgment to recognize good answers and afterwards, you might want to give some trial tasks.

Other employers usually love interviewing Filipino VA's using skype so that they can somehow identify the level and set of skills , and on top of that a bit of the personality of that Filipino worker .

        Hope that helps.

        Cheers,
        Louie

    That's basically it Ryne...

Certain countries have their particular strengths. I believe most established outsourcing companies (particularly those dealing with VAs) have their camp set up in the Philippines but offer services from different providers. A lot of US entreps still hire Canadian writers, East Europe programmers, India tech writers, Philippine transcribers, VA and researchers, etc.

Best to go through a company if you're new at this to have them mix/match the right candidate for you, when you get the hang of it, you can go hire someone directly off Odesk/ELance.

Almost all of my staff are from the Philippines and they do amazing work. Here is what they do:

    1. customer service
    2. billing
    3. Article writing
    4. Contacting potential JV affiliate partners
    5. Youtube video creating and marketing
    6. Graphics design
    7. WP design and setup
    8. more, more, more

John Jonas has a great site at How to Outsource to the Philippines - John Jonas Replace Myself - He shows you how to find the right people and has videos and training modules to hand off to your staff to do the work. I use it and its how I hired all of my staff.

The average salary I pay my people is $300 a month and they do AMAZING work

They are good at writing, smart and hard working people, but you always make sure they understand the works. Because they are shy, they afraid about your feeling. You must not leave they work alone, contact with them by skype and held them step by step, check and review at next day. After one week, you can leave they work by themselves.

And you are also beware about they disappear, so you need to have at least 2 VA and give haft of work to them, this may harder for control, but when one leave, you have other for backup.

My partner and I employ two awesome Filipino assistants, and they are invaluable to our business.

We also have gone through 4 others who were not so stellar, no different than if we'd been hiring local talent. Some people (Filipino, Indian, American, Canadian, etc) simply have a better work ethic than others do. After a reasonable trial period we amicably parted ways with them.

Like any employer-employee relationship it is a two-way street. You cannot expect someone to leap right in and do the job without any training. I have invested dozens of hours in training our guys, and it has more than paid itself back. They are always eager to learn new skills and truly appreciate new challenges.

I'll also have to say that they are among the most courteous and dependable workers I have ever employed.

When we first hired them we paid them weekly, in advance. This proved to be a good strategy, as one of the ones that didn't work out simply disappeared (we eventually got the money back via a PayPal dispute claim). The two guys who are "keepers" are now paid monthly in advance as they have more than proven themselves to be trustworthy.

The time-zone difference proves to be a bit of a challenge, especially on the east coast where we are half a day away from them. Be prepared to spend a few very late nights while you are training them (your location in the UK may not be as difficult, more like early mornings for you). We have come to rely on an online Project Management system, and our guys are capable now of working without supervision. But in the beginning you can expect to be working odd hours while you get your crew established.

Treat your people right - pay them a decent (by Filipino standards) wage and give them periodic bonuses when they deserve them, just as you would with any workers with whom you intended to build a long-term relationship. It may take a while to find the right ones (we took about 3 months) but once you do it will be one of the best business decisions you could ever make.

    Best of luck

    Bill

There are a lot of Filipino that are good as VA's. Most of them are hard working and can easily adopt their employer's standards. Basically, with the language of English as applied in all schools in the country, probably has something to do with their good command of the English language.
Odesk.com and onlinejobs.ph presents lists of Filipino who are offering their services as article writers, back linkers, customer services and many more. I would say that they have rates which are cheaper than the others. But it really depends on the person's qualifications and skills that we have to refer for his/her abilities
