What do your Philippino VA's do for you?

Ok, Im wondering whats up with this Filipino worker stuff. I mean, im filipino, but not born in P.I (Philippines Islands). Are you saying, if I had my own business, I could create jobs for my peoples in P.I??

I know of two people with P.I. workers.

One has seven full time employees... he started with one and so on.
They build websites, write articles, write copy, SEO... you name it, they do it.
Of course he trained them up from camtasia videos etc... and held their hands until they were competent.
Now they train themselves. I believe he pays them well.
bestjobs.com is a good place to look for employees. $400/month is what you can expect to pay.

I was on Odesk again today interviewing people for SEO. Couple of other things to consider. Nearly all providers will apply for your job with a generic application, this is unavoidable. I generally progress the better ones to an "interview" 15-20 at a time. In this interview I give the interviewees a specific set of questions to answer. This gives me an idea of their english ability, and level of knowledge. Only after successfuly completeing my questions do i bother with their CV, work history etc. Otherwise you'll spend hours reading cv's that say the same things, give examples of sites that don't exist, or are the same as everyone elses.
Always be specific with times. Their work ethic varies substantially. Give them deadlines. Ask when they will work for you, and for how many hours. (many juggle jobs).

You'll find that certain Filipinos are hard working and loyal.
They won't copy and steal your trade secrets.

They'll even give you a lot of respect even after the work
is done.

However, like everywhere else, there will also be rotten
tomatoes, so the best thing to do is to test them before
you hire them. If they show enough initiative and are
pleasant to communicate with, then you might have
yourself a winner..

Also make sure to communicate with them. You don't have
to do it daily. At least once a week. Give them clear instructions
and don't expect them to read your mind..They are freelancers
not psychics.

I also just want to make some recommendations. Even though
a lot of us here are not charging much (there are VA's
you can get for as low as $300 per month) please do take
care of your Filipino VA's or freelancers. Otherwise they could
get burnt-out. However, IMHO I can proudly say that most of the time
Filipino freelancers deliver..

Certain countries have their particular strengths. I believe most established outsourcing companies (particularly those dealing with VAs) have their camp set up in the Philippines but offer services from different providers. A lot of US entreps still hire Canadian writers, East Europe programmers, India tech writers, Philippine transcribers, VA and researchers, etc.

Best to go through a company if you're new at this to have them mix/match the right candidate for you, when you get the hang of it, you can go hire someone directly off Odesk/ELance.

Almost all of my staff are from the Philippines and they do amazing work. Here is what they do:

3. Article writing
4. Contacting potential JV affiliate partners
5. Youtube video creating and marketing
6. Graphics design
7. WP design and setup
8. more, more, more

My partner and I employ two awesome Filipino assistants, and they are invaluable to our business.

We also have gone through 4 others who were not so stellar, no different than if we'd been hiring local talent. Some people (Filipino, Indian, American, Canadian, etc) simply have a better work ethic than others do. After a reasonable trial period we amicably parted ways with them.

Like any employer-employee relationship it is a two-way street. You cannot expect someone to leap right in and do the job without any training. I have invested dozens of hours in training our guys, and it has more than paid itself back. They are always eager to learn new skills and truly appreciate new challenges.

I'll also have to say that they are among the most courteous and dependable workers I have ever employed.

When we first hired them we paid them weekly, in advance. This proved to be a good strategy, as one of the ones that didn't work out simply disappeared (we eventually got the money back via a PayPal dispute claim). The two guys who are "keepers" are now paid monthly in advance as they have more than proven themselves to be trustworthy.

The time-zone difference proves to be a bit of a challenge, especially on the east coast where we are half a day away from them. Be prepared to spend a few very late nights while you are training them (your location in the UK may not be as difficult, more like early mornings for you). We have come to rely on an online Project Management system, and our guys are capable now of working without supervision. But in the beginning you can expect to be working odd hours while you get your crew established.

Treat your people right - pay them a decent (by Filipino standards) wage and give them periodic bonuses when they deserve them, just as you would with any workers with whom you intended to build a long-term relationship. It may take a while to find the right ones (we took about 3 months) but once you do it will be one of the best business decisions you could ever make.

Yes, Phillipino workers are MUCH BETTER than Indians. They have a Better English, Very Responsible guys and Very Educated...
