I think he is saying don't be afraid to try things, because some of them will turn out quite well, and he will be smiling because he made money.

      Petty much you got it.

I was thinking of the customer that would come to a site, see a popup, get mad and leave. That lead me to think of what happens when a page is being tested. Someone has to visit it and vote with their dollars. Some of them will surely encounter the bad stuff that is being tested.

True, you just need to keep testing and trying to get better results, not just for IM, but every aspect of life. E.g cooking, which direction to drive, restaurant to go etc. Even big manufacturers make different products to test us all the time.

How can the "bad" stuff make you more money?

My definition of "bad" is that it makes less money.

What's yours? Whatever it is... you need to change it before you do more testing.

Only test the good stuff and you'll be fine. You'll just be making good even better.

    That's silly talk.

No successful business person I know tests and tracks bad stuff.

It certainly is NOT the only way to know what works. Whoever told you such a naughty lie?

Have you never heard of a swipe file? Have you never heard of copywriters? Or word use studies? Or pricing studies? Or any other kind of advertising or copy studies? Have you never heard of proxy tests or associative tests?

Nobody with any brains actually tests the known bad stuff. That would be business suicide when your competitors are using modern tools to only resort to testing the good stuff against the better stuff.
