I am keyword confused

Let me see if I can explain this correctly....I have been doing keyword research for articles that I want to write to drive traffic to my site.

The general consesus that I have read on the forum is to have the keyword placed apporximately 3-4 times throughout the article for a 500 word article. Okay no problem.

But when doing my research, I decided to look at the articles that are number one on Google for the search term. When I analyzed these articles, I only found the keyword once or maybe twice in the article.

So if the keyword density is really low how did these articles get to the first page of Google?

These were Ezine articles by the way.

Thanks
Lucinda

Not only the keyword density matters but also the number of backlinks it has, the keyword in the title and the competition for that keyword also matters. When you have keyword only once in the content and in the title and if you have good number of backlinks and if the competition is low, you can easily rank for that keyword term.

I am using keywords that get searched for a decent amount each month and I am making sure that these keywords have less than 500,000 competing results. I am trying to find the lowest competing results that I can.

Okay, could you explain the backlinks a little more to me? I am sorry for being so dense but how do you get backlinks to your article?

If you get a good keyword, write a decent article, submit it to ezine articles what else do I need to do with it?

    I would agree with 3 - 4 times.

If the keyword is particularly obscure then it might work with 1 or 2 mentions. You will find that most people put the keyword in the following 4 places

    Headline
    First Paragraph
    Last paragraph
    Keyword/tags section

    Some factors include:

    - EZA is an authority site
    - His article titles must've contain the keyword
    - Maybe it has some backlinks from relevant sites

I'm no expert on this but I believe that Google is also running new algorithms which look at how many words "similar" to your keyword topic you are using. So it looks more natural and not just stuffed with the main keyword. You may want to pm a guy called Martin Avis who has created a keyword tool that helps with this - he's on the forum somewhere!

      John,

I have heard that Google does use a different algorithm besides just the keywords. I try to write my articles as natural as possible to avoid the appearance of writing just for the keywords.

I will have to look up the Warrior you mentioned to get more information on this software. It could be very helpful.

      thanks

You can use social bookmarking sites like stumbleupon, digg etc to get backlinks. If you have a blog, you can link to the article from your blog. You can even create a squidoo lens and link to the article from it.

You can also write one article and submit to all the directories and link to your ezine article from it.

Make sure you link to the articles using the keywords you are targeting. This will give your backlinks more power.

Thank you for the great suggestions.

I did try to digg my article yesterday but digg would not acept it because it said that digg users have reported ezine articles as a site that is abusing Digg. Has anyone else had this problem trying to Digg an ezine article?

I haven't tried submitting my ezine articles to digg. I normally don't submit much articles to EZA. I have only 7 articles in my EZA account and all of them were written in the past one month. I normally get backlinks to my blogs using digg and these backlinks have good power.
