Steps to Niche Selection

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could help me review the steps that I currently use to scope out niches, and possibly suggest some alternatives.

1. Use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get an idea of rough amount of searches per month

2. Run a couple of searches on main keyword and similar keywords to get an idea of the amount of competition

3. Scope out some of the top competition websites using spyfu and alexa (probably not the best way, but it gives me an idea)

4. Continue to check out the progress of the main keyword and similar keywords using Google Trends

Thanks in advance,

-Vish.

Yes, this is about right however you can go as deep as you want to in your reseach.

Have a look at products and affiliate programs in the niche, are they selling well?

How may adwords are there for the keywords?

    How competitive is the niche?

Can you better any product that is there already? Maybe add video or audio?

    Just some ideas.

    All the best

All OK but remember that numbers etc. can give you ideas but not an exact science. So think too about if there is really money in your niche - e.g. homeless people living on the street niche Vs luxury yacht owners, as an extreme example. Also test your ideas out - run some ppc ads to a survey or opt-in page and see what happens.

I personally find the google adwords tool great to be able to find new niches, and help out with current ones. One of the best tools on the web imo!
