How To Catch A Theif Question

by Blase
20 replies
I have a Warrior that has pirated
my stuff and put it online for
others to download.

I have sent the person emails
and a PM regarding the situation.

No response.

I have his url, his server id and
his DNS.

What can I do?
What should I do?

Thanks

I may have a bit of a similar situtation.

I'd recommend contacting their host, show the infringing content, etc, etc.

If your Product is a PDF Document, you can make it password protected.

In the present situation there is not much you can do except reporting the matter to that person's Host.

Unfortunately, that doesn't stop folks who are intent on passing along another's property. They just pass along the PW too. And yet it makes it more difficult for honest customers to use the product.

For example, an honest customer goes back to his hard drive to read an ebook 6 months after he purchased it. He can't remember the password -- a mad search ensues. Maybe he writes to customer service. And perhaps CS say the customers needs to find receipt before CS will pass on PW. Uff, lots of hassle for everyone.

(Not that there aren't times a product should be PW protected, but just sending up a red flag to the potential pitfalls.)

In addition to reporting this person to his/her host, also consider reporting this person's activities to his/her ISP, domain registrar, payment processor (if applicable), etc. In other words, any account linked to the actual illegal activity.

        Cheers,
        Becky

How do I figure out who the host is?

      Thanks

            I just figured it out.

I typed in his web address xxx.xxx.xx.xxx
not his url and I got his host.

On domainingdiva.com there is a DMCA sample about 4th post down with instructions on how to find their host and how to use it. It is very effective. I would also go to the help forum here and tell the mods. They should at least be banned for stealing.

I would also pass the info on to the help desk. It would alert them to a potential problem member if nothing else.

I totally aggree with this. Someone has gone to the trouble of creating their own product after a long period of research, and then this happens!

It's hard enough making money on the internet anyway, but to do this on the same forum as the person whose work you have copied is just plain wrong!

      Mark,

This won't help Blase's current situation but can help in the future.

The wso you mention is by fellow warrior Michael Silvester. Do a search on him and you will find his wso.

contact hosting provider + contact google. Its unlikely that his provider is fine with him distributing copyrighted software. His site might be sooner down than what you might think

I know some people won't like this response, but most of the time it's most lucrative to ignore these people. If you sell enough digital products online, they will be stolen and given away or re-sold eventually. If you go after every thief you find online, you'll find yourself wasting valuable time. Time that would have made you more money, had you been building your other products.

There are some exceptions to this of course. If the thief is out ranking you in Google, or if it's quite obvious that they are putting a dent in your business, then you may be able to justify the time spent going after them.

But let me tell you from experience. If a thief is in a different country than you, there's not much you can do about it. I've had some thieves hosting shut down, only to have them up and running on another host a few hours later. And if they are in another country, there's not much legally you can do that won't cost you more than it's worth. In most cases (in my opinion) it's most beneficial to just ignore them. If most of them could do harm, they'd be making money legitimately.

    Hello,
the best way to catch a thief is to think like a thief.
This is the main method that detectives have used to catch many a thief.
