Not sure about the first question. Are you asking how to become a web designer? The second question...well it's personal preference. If you have never created a website, then you need to do some serious studying if you want to make money at it. There are many different ways to create web pages. From cranking out html by hand to using a very technical web design program like Microsoft Expression Web or Dream Weaver.

I don't know of any free hosting with fantastico. Even so, you don't want to use free hosting for your web sites. Usually the hosting company puts their ads on the free hosting sties and they look very unprofessional.

I use Wordpress for a lot of my sites - and for others I use Serif WebPlus. I used the paid for version of Serif, but you can download a free version from FreeSerifSoftware – free software downloads

I wouldn't recommend free hosting - it's full of advertising and/or the support is poor.

I also wouldn't recommend that you become "a web designer" without a bit of practice first. Make some sites that you are pleased with so that you have something to show your customers.

      Good luck

Dreamweaver is one of the best software to build a website. If you want to learn how to do web design, there are really a lot of competition around, and one thing, u have to be a creative person, good art sense in design, only can stand out from others/ compete with the pros.

I respectively disagree. The code is bloated more that word press (unless you have no nav bar which seems to take half the code in DW) and the software has malware (DMCA Spyware) in it that 'phones home' before allowing use. I'd rather just download the latest virus as put that crap on my computer!

How to do web design job? You'd better ascertain that what kind of programs you are good at.And you want to be responsible for the whole part or just a part?Do you have any insight into the design itself of a website? Then you can try to learn it according to your real condition. For code learning,my advice is that do not use the software to learn, and just use simple tool to edit it.That will help you form a good habit and base.

As others have said, if you're building a business you will need to invest some money in hosting and a domain in order to look professional. I recommend Namecheap for the domain and Hostgator for hosting, but there are many solutions out there.

As far as actually doing web design, my advice would be to learn HTML and CSS. Back when i learnt, I read a book called "CSS Mastery" which had some great info it, but there are loads of sites online where you can learn CSS/HTML for free.

Yes you can use software like Dreamweaver etc, but almost all professional web developers I know will still write their own code within these programs.

It will also benefit you to have some photoshop development skills, although this is not essential, it depends which area of web design/development you're targetting yourself at.

I'd also recommend that you try and aim your services at a particular market, or specialise in a particular service. For example, my Minisite Studio business focuses on building minisites for the internet marketing crowd.

You could for example target developing wordpress blogs in the health and fitness market. Being more specific positions you as more of an expert instantly, and allows you to become the "go-to guy (or girl)" in that market.

HTML is not all that hard. If you can post on a forum, you can learn HTML in a ...flash... no pun intended. Lol.
These two resources for learning it are the best I know of:
    Webmonkey: the Web Developers Resource
    HTML Tutorial
and a good CSS forum when you run into problems you need a quick answer to:
    Killersites.com Web Design Forums

If you really want to be pro, forget Dreamweaver, pick up BBEdit and learn to code by hand. HTML, CSS and Photoshop are a solid foundation, and the best way to get web design jobs is to get web design jobs. Nothing like a good portfolio of what you have already done... so at first you might need to do some sites for low cost, or design your own sites so that you can create a portfolio which will attract more solid gigs.

If you want to be a designer - you will need photoshop, action scripts to create ecovers. You will also need a little talent or lots of hard work.

you might want to try following lots of tutorials online

also study other graphic designs and see how they are put together

its all about study study and more study

    thanks

Build a portfolio of websites first by building some for friends, relatives, non profit organizations and ask for testimonials. Customers want to see what you've done before they hire you.

      Other ideas
Definitely design your own website to show off your expertise
Go to rent a coder or other locations to bid for web design jobs
Visit forums, blogs, websites and/or the local library to learn as much as you can about designing, building and marketing websites.
Offer to build websites for local businesses
Join the local chamber of commerce

Set goals, objectives and a time line for accomplishing each objective
Make a business plan (most folks don't). It's your road map to success
      Create a business marketing plan
      Work your plan
Perseverance and consistency is the key to success. 90% of businesses fail within the first few years because they give up.

      Good luck

Never think you can be a web designer/developer just because you can build a web site. You may know how to use a hammer, but could you build a house?

Dreamweaver is the industry standard, but using it takes skill and time.

I have been a web developer for 10 years and yeah, sure, some kid could make you a site in some basic HTML editor but how far is it going?

Save the grief... hire a web developer.

A nice site with 2.0 technologies, AJAX, Javascript, pop unders, user interactivity etc.... will get you further.

The public is getting wise to free blog sites with links/ads that look amateurish.
A pro site has instant street cred.
