Forced Continuity a Bad Thing ? Rant !

I have mixed emotions on this. This will hurt a lot of marketers that are not trying to hide anything or screw over anybody. I think that continuity is OK but when coupled with forced makes it sound forced. There are some marketers that are forcing continuity and not being transparent about it. These guys need to be stopped but not at the expense of everybody.

On another note I have had a merchant account for my service business since 1992. 3rd party Control has changed hands 3 times over the years. I look at my statement for last month and see a charge for $89.71 that I didnt make. I call my service provider to find out that it is a yearly fee for having the account. I explain to the lady that I have never seen this before until now. She says it is in my contract. I ask her where and she says she will have to call me back after she pulls the contract. A day later she calls to tell me she cant find it but she did see that I was charged this fee last year with no complaints so it stands as valid.
To me this is Forced Continuity! The banking industry has gotten away with this for years as well as the utility providers. What makes this right for them?

Am I wrong in saying that when you opt in to a program you are under an agreement (contract) with a service provider ? What gives Visa/Mastercard the right to break an agreement between others?
When you opt in with a cell phone provider you get a Free phone but you have to use their service for 2 years. Isn't this Forced Continuity?
Wait, you can opt out early but it will cost you an early termination fee. You cant just choose to opt out with no charges. Allbeit though I think that you can opt out of IM forced continuity with out paying a fee.

Ok I need to stop before I really get going.

Forced is not a word i would choose. You should always have the opportunity to cancel anytime.

I mean i remember when AOL first came on the seen. You heard stories where people could never cancel or get their refund their monthly payments.

Aslong as you are clear and upfront. no small print. You will be protected from any of the fraudualent chargebacks.

You know the it wasn't me but my teenager stole my credit card chargebacks. Alot of these merchant gateways have implement fraud control that helps out. Using AVS and CV2 has helped out alot for many people

I'm not a big fan of forced continuity, even if I'm full aware of the monthly charge. However, I can fully understand, as long as your being 110% honesty, and you drill in down so that they know, that there will be a monthly charge. I like to use my continuity programs as an OTO up-sell, no forced. They select it, because they come to the conclusion that it has more value. This way its there decision and they will defend it.

I've done both, haven't seen any real difference between forces and voluntary continuity programs. With an acception, when I make it an voluntary OTO up-sell, I tend to see a reduced number of refunds.

If a Marketeer offer someone to trial a product or service and clearly state that on the offer, I have absolutely no problem with that. It is but a marketing strategy. However, there are some greedy crooks about that will hide some trickery behind fine prints, really make my blood boil.
Only a few days ago, I posted some such trick about an advert supposed from a Working from home Mum!
It started from an Email campaign from such a mum claiming earned $900 from a working from home package. It was presented in such a way, claiming announcements from all the big national news channels. It even faint connection with Google. In fact all the connection with Google was that the Package would give some informations on how to make use of Google. On research further, someone was complaining bitterly how $79 or a figure similar to that was deducted from his account next day after signing up for a trial of the package. Apparently, buried within the fine prints, according to the complaint, it was a 2 days trial period. The complaint even pointed out that it was a 2 day not 48 hours. I presume that was to facilitate a withdrawal before any change of mind could take place.
That kind of marketing behaviour, regardless of how difficult is to earn a living, is simply unforgivable. I am posting here again just in case someone else should fall into the trap.

"Forced" doesn't really describe it exactly.

There is HIDDEN continuity - and that's bad, very bad. Especially, if you cannot get out of it easily.

And there is openly offered continuity, where you can opt out with a simple click. Nothing wrong with that.

Forced continuity is where you offer the customer a gift but they can only get that gift if they join for a fee recurringly. ****Edit it also can pertain to offering a "free trial" like I got "advised to do" on here not so long ago I never felt good about it and I took it off after a few days now I see and understand if I had of left it I would be shut down as well. Thank God for little things. but anyway that is the definition hence the use of the word "forced"

Forced is like the Columbia CD and those Bookclubs.

You know the ones that send you the product you never asked for first and then bill you for it.

From what I hear- Visa and Mastercard are coming
down on people with Forced Continuity...

They Demand Complete Transparency, and are sending
People [Not Spiders] to verify people's sales processes...

So if you wanna keep your forced Conitnuity-
Make sure to put like 15 disclaimers telling them
about the forced continuity! (Not Legal disclaimers
    but moreso Warnings.)

    Watch Out Bros....
