Selling Advertising Slots - Any experts?

Howdy,

I have a site that's ranked #1 in Google for a pretty competitive term. I used Adsense and affiliate marketing on the site so far for revenue generation.

I've been toying with the idea of selling advertising slots on the site but I've never done this before and I'm just wondering does anyone here have any experience or suggestions on this?

I'm looking for a pricing structure in terms of how much for how many impressions. And optimal "slot" sizes and positioning.

Thanks in advance guys :-)

    Does it get good traffic?

A lot of bloggers that get 1000 uniques daily will usually
sell their ad spots for $97+. That is for the 125x125
    ad spots of course.

Other ones will be more expensive.

IM Headlines - thanks for that!

The site gets between 30,000 and 40,000 uniques per month.

$97 per month isn't bad I suppose. Just trying to branch out away from Google ala Shoemoney :-)

Many people will over price their ad spots, there will be nothing you can do about this if your a buyer, as a seller many people try and squeeze every penny out and also follow others like sheep with no idea.

The very best thing you can do to bring reality to your cause is go of to projectwonderful . com or a site like that.

these guys will let you load any size text or banner size and or combinations you want, then set that to auto bid, In other words to do not set a minimum price.

Then let the market dictate what your site is worth, that will be it's true value on any given day.

Google adsense is in effect another market factor that will work for you as you have suggested.

Spent many long and hard times placing ads and through all of that i worked out a quick mans way for me to see if a site was over priced or not based on probably tens of thousands if not many more times that in ad placements.

to do this get visitor numbers as this will be your base to work with, you don't mention a number so I will use 50K as a guide

first take the last 2 numbers from the visitor count

50,000 = 500 then you move the decimal place 2 points to the left = 5.00, this calculation will give you the medium price range

you then divide that by 2 = 2.50 this calculation then gives a range factor for upper and lower ranges, first it gives the lower range, then by adding that to the medium i get the upper range. this would result in this

< $2.50 ( $5.00 ) $ 7.50 > that formula that is quick to do now tells me i want to pay some where between $2.50 and $7.50 to place an ad on that site, if its a busy site and my ad is down the bottom i would be looking on the lower side of the scale.

If it was good top left position or eye line and not busy I would be looking at the higher side.

Not looking for a flame war on if it is right or wrong, all i can say is that works for me and i have placed crap loads of ads.

The only other thing to keep in mind is many newish advertisers will for many reasons pay more than need be so if your getting above that formula your doing well, just sail along and enjoy the journey.

    Cheers

Tryinhere - major thanks for that. The whole idea of selling advertising is very new to me so your advice was spot on.

The idea is to replace/supplement the Adsense income on that site with something more stable - like paid advertising.

I've heard guys charging $250 per month for slots. That's more what I'm aiming for (well higher than that is even better! :-)
