Someone reading this is discouraged and about to give up. Before you do consider these quotes..

Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. - Harriet Beecher Stowe

Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit. Conrad Hilton

Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent. - Marilyn vos Savant

Defeat may test you; it need not stop you. If at first you don't succeed, try another way. For every obstacle there is a solution. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. The greatest mistake is giving up. - Unknown

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. - Thomas Alva Edison

It's true. I've seen this in action. You can tell you are about to succeed when you are tired discouraged and have about reached your limit.

Learning to land an airplane was like that for me. Try as I might I could not get it right. Over and over I would practice and I was never able to put it where it should be. The instructor and I were tired. I was discouraged and wanted to quit the dream of learning to fly.

Then one day it all came together. I was able to put that airplane down and make a "squeeker" landing almost every time. Something had changed. The instructor tried something new. It worked and my brain saw the light. I've been able to land an airplane with little trouble ever since.

Don't give up today. Keep going. I know you are tired, I know you are jaded from all the people touting easy money. I know you have tried a bunch of things. Step back, figure it out, and keep going.

I love the story from Think and Grow Rich and a guy who gave up digging for gold three feet from the main strike. The guy who bought the claim from him dug three more feet and became a millionaire. Don't give up!

An uncle of R.U. Darby was caught by the "gold fever" in the gold-rush days, and went out West to dig and grow rich. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the brains of men than has ever been taken from the Earth. He staked a claim and went to work with pick and shovel. The going was hard, but his lust for gold was definite. After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home in Williamsburg, Maryland, and then told his relatives and a few neighbors of the "strike." They got together money for the needed machinery, and had it shipped to location. The uncle and Darby went back to work the mine.

The first car of ore was mined, and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big killing in profits.

Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle! Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again - all to no avail. Finally, they decided to quit.

They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Some "junk" men are dumb, but not this one! He called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with "fault lines." His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling! That is exactly where it was found!

The "junk" man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.

Thanks for this post Scott! On more than one occasion I've felt like throwing in the towel. Or did. Still struggle with it a little, but lately I've been trying harder to stay focused on specific projects and am determined to keep going until I see better results. Your post really drives this home for me even more.

    Love this - thanks Scott.

I'm glad you added the bit about 'step back, figure it out.' If something isn't working then it may mean that you need to change what you're doing. An integral part of Internet marketing is testing, but this isn't just a matter of testing headlines on a web page. It's also a matter of testing business models and even testing what kind of business suits you best.

One thing that seems often overlooked is the fact that we all have different talents and interests. What works for one person, may not work for another person simply because of different talents and interests.

So keep focused on your destination, but be willing to change your vehicle, route, etc and above all try to enjoy the journey... because you'll probably spend more of your time on the journey than at the destination!
