Is this the end of targeting misspelled keywords?

Hi everyone,

I noticed something about Google that has me a bit worried, especially since I am trying to rank for some misspelled keywords.

If you go to Google and type in for example "jewelery stores" The search results will come back and say "showing results for jewelry stores but if you want the results for jewelery stores click here"

This shows that Google won't show the search results for the misspelling and instead automatically shows the results for the right spelling.

Any thoughts?

Same thing happened to me too. I made a page for PhiLips home theater systems instead of PhiLLips. I had the same issue and was pretty disappointed!

The strange thing is that when I put my misspelled keyword into adwords to see how many impressions I get it does actually get decent impressions on [exact] but Google doesn't display the misspelling on the search results.

      It doesnt make sense

        Jan,

When I missspell a word on google I usually click the misspelling feature instead of retyping in the word, I don't know how long they have been doing this but it seems that misspelled keyword's are going to hurt badly because of it.

I find it strange that Google only auto corrects some but not all misspelled words.

you just noticed??? :-) I thought this has been around for a while... google simply corrects a lot of misspellings by statistics... some of the misspellings are so common, that it has hard time to tell for sure.. case in example.. "referal" is used through out web programming industry....

Well, my spelling for the most part is half decent and it hasn't been until recently that I tried to build a site around misspeled keywords that I noticed this happening. My main keyword for the site is a misspelling and google keyword tool shows 3000 searches a month. I put the keyword as exact match on Google adwords and it is getting that amount of impressions but when I type that keyword into Google it automatically corrects it and shows the search results for the correct spelling so I don't see how the misspelling can have all those impressions on exact match.

The reason the adwords ad will show up because that is how many times people are typing the word incorrectly. That really has no bearing on what google shows for its organic results. This means if you are going to try and target a probably increasing number of misspellings that the only way you will be able to do it via google is by using adwords.

They have been showing the "did you mean this" at the top for quite awhile but I have noticed a couple of times recently that I did not even get that, they just showed me the results for the correct spelling without even asking.

hmmm.....that's interesting. I hadn't actually noticed this before. I think that does mean that we might be seeing the end of getting traffic through mispelled keywords. It's a shame.
