You might've heard that you can't or shouldn't use the word 'free' in your emails. Well, after extensive testing on behalf of a wide number of clients over the last 3 months, I want to dispel that urban legend and say that you can still use "Free" in a subject line and you can get good results.

Here's the thing...

When we tested this over the last 3 months, our results showed that people still respond to the magic word "free" - The increase in orders and other actions outweighed the messages lost to filtering (Yes, some were lost).

If You're Going To Use the 'F' word...

If you are still using the 'F' word, make sure you follow the steps I've given below. These are what I'd refer to as 'common sense' best practices for Internet Marketers' and anyone involved in email marketing.

If you do, you'll greatly decrease the chances of your email getting chewed up by spam filters.
  1. You should NOT use "free" as the first word
  2. Never use the word "free" together with an exclamation point (!)
  3. Don't spell the word "FREE" ... in all capital letters
The 'F' word will always grab attention!
