How do I buy an expired domain fast?

Hoping someone can help me out here.

I have been a member of a forum type of website for several years. The site has been declining in popularity for the past year or two and there have been rumors that the owner was not going to renew the domain when it came up for expiration.

Today I went to log onto the site and it was gone. No warning...just POOF! Looks like it is parked with a message saying the domain has expired.

I would really like to buy this domain. I assume that it will be available on godaddy auctions at some point, but i want to see if there is some way i can take action and speed up the process.

also, i am wondering, if i do find a way and actually purchase the domain is there any way to retain what was there before it went down? since it was a forum there are all kinds of posts and useful info that i would love to be able to salvage.

thanks in advance for your help.

    If you go to:

    Whois.net - Domain Names

and type in the domain, you'll get a name. If you then go down the page you'll see a link saying:

For complete domain details go to:
    LINK

This page should give you an email address of the current owner so you can contact them directly.

    Cheers,
    Chris

I use whois.domaintools.com to monitor domains that are of interest. If you can't get the domain by contacting the previous owner directly, then you are in a waiting game for it - and the people who make their money buying and selling domains are probably waiting to pounce. Meantime, domaintools.com has a facility where you can search for deleted domains which are available to re-register - you never know, you might pick up something even better

You can hire a broker from Sedo.

    Sedo - The world's leading domain marketplace-Sedo.com

Sedo enables you to negotiate anonymously through a traditional offer/counter-offer system, as well as through our auction platform. If you lack the time or experience to negotiate a good price for a domain, ask Sedo's domain sales team to take over. Our expert brokers have over a 70% success rate when it comes to closing deals, so you can feel confident that our team can secure the domains you want!

    * Learn about the domain before you invest. Each offer page gives you important information about a domain. You can see how much traffic a domain gets, whether developed content is included, or how many offers the seller has received. If you're not sure how those details affect a domain's value, order an expert, individualized appraisal.
    * Make an offer. Got your sights set on a domain? The easiest way to express interest is by making an offer. Many domains are open to negotiation, while some are listed with fixed prices for a quick option. Please note that all offers are binding for 7 days .
    * Bid on a running auction. If you're short on time, check out Sedo's running auctions. If you're the highest bidder, and the reserve has been met, that domain is all yours.
    * Apply for brokerage assistance. If you and a seller can't find a common ground, or if the domain you want is not currently listed on Sedo's marketplace, we can help. Sedo offers you the chance to have one of the industry's best brokers working on your behalf to negotiate and find the best price for a domain.

Best to contact the owner via iWhois.com
If you really want the domain, don't make a low ball offer or try to explain that "Since you're not renewing can I have it?" or "Since you're not renewing I'll give you $7" etc... That's a sure fire way to NOT have a chance at owning the domain. Make a real offer based on your want/need. Will it cost you more than a new reg? of course, however it may be less expensive than if it goes to drop auction. Plus you have a base to build your site/business.
