Is anyone else baffled by keywords?

Hi Warriors,
This is a two part question.

1) When researching keywords what is the prime search return number (with quotes) you feel confident you should go after. For instance on google do you get excited when you find a term in your niche shows 10k, 50k, 100k, etc. as search volume?

What search volume shows great potential but not so high it would be a struggle to dominate the page for that term.

2) Also, do search engines penalize for having too many keywords? If so whats the max that should be used?

    "Rule of thumb" is 100 daily searches and under 30,000 pages in competition, but that is only a general idea for those unwilling to do further checks.

    If you find a high search volume, see what comes up on page one of Google. See if you think you can beat one of the top 5 spots. If you think you can, do it. If the top 5 are all authority sites, you might decide the work involved in knocking one of them down a notch is too high a price to pay for that keyword...but keep in mind that if the volume is high enough, an average of 12% of searchers find their way to page 2, Even more if they are looking for a service or product and the top results are all information and research in scope. So if the top results are all wikipedia-like and you think you can beat the 1st product site... it can be well worth the time, even if it means the highest you get is page 2!

    If you want to get on to page one of google quickly use a keyword that has a return under 5.000 . You also need to see what page ranking the other sites have got on page one of google for that keyword. If the sites have a low page rank and you can create an article and post it on ezine there is a very good chance you will list on page one for your article.
