Choosing a good domain name

Hi guys,

I have been searching for domain names and came across a very good one but it is taken . It is a .com domain and I was thinking about just putting a hyphen between the two words in the domain. Would that be a good idea, or do you think I should just use a different domain name that I seen that has half the number of searches as the really good one does? Or, instead of a .com should I use a .net or .info etc?

Thanks for your help.

Kerri

As long as the good keyword is in the domain it does not matter if you use .net .org or -.

    That has been my experience.

Hyphens work great for many of my sites.

Ofcourse the keyword should be in the domain and preferably i've heard should be the first word of the domain for example datingchickens not chickendating (if dating is your niche, and chickendating if your site would be about chickens) okay I don't know where that came from but you got the idea.

Thanks for all of your advice I guess .net and .org are equally as good?

        Hi again,

I was just wondering, if you find a really great keyword, are you best to just add a hyphen in between the words, or are you best to add an 's' or a whole word onto the end?

        Thanks

Anyone got any ideas? Trying to choose a domain name just now but I really don't know if adding a word or an 's' is better than adding a hyphen?

If you PM me your prospective niche I will take a look around for some good ones and give you them, I have so many great potential names from my last 2 days of looking that I probably cannot use them all...if one fits I will even give it you

(Though it is up to you to register it lol)

Adding hyphens or numbers or plurals or even typos can have potentially incredible results, making a $10 site into one with a resale value of $100s, however it can have the opposite effect and usually does :p

    For example:

    http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=diamondring.com
    http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=diamond-ring.com
    http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=diamondrings.com

It is all about who might actually land on your page first...for example, the first one was already taken...didn't stop me grabbing the second though lol

    http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=minicamcorder.com
    http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=camcordermini.com

Yet if I had simply shoved a hyphen in the middle it would've knocked the worth down far more than the one I eventually grabbed...

    http://estibot.com/results.php?domai...-camcorder.com

Values are all subjective though until you get traffic and can sell them to someone else, especially with software guessing at it

Try shoving a numer 1 at the end of the word "mini" and you will see exactly what i mean :p

    http://estibot.com/results.php?domain=camcordermin1.com

    Completely worthless lol

      Thanks for your help guys.

Well I found a keyword that has a great amount of searches, and low competition. I am just wondering then, if I should just add a number or word on the end, or should I just go for my second best keyword which has half the amount of searches as the first keyword.

      Thanks

        Hey Kerri

I ALWAYS use a .com, no matter what. Maybe because I'm in the site flipping business, it makes the site more credible...But I always prefer .com.

For 2 word domains, you can use a hyphen, for more than 2 words, don't use a hyphen. Sure, it won't impact your SEO, but people could easily forget your domain name in the future.

If the actual phrase of the domain is taken, I normally add a prefix or suffix in the domain name.

The above is my criteria and it works like a charm.

        Hope that helps

    Hi Kerry,

This has been discussed on many occasions and many forums.

It seems to me to be a question of how you are going to market your product.

If you are going to be directing people to your website through classified advertising, or article marketing or any offline means, then it doesn't seem to make a difference what your website is called. Obviously it helps if you can find one that has some reference to what it is about, but if not so what? If your sales ad is good enough it will direct the person to your site.

If, however, you are going down the Keywords route, then you will need to find a site name that fits in with your Keywords. If you do this and create the site with the right keywords in the right places, and your niche is a good one, then you will end up high in the search rankings for those Keywords.

I suspect you may know this already. Just go back over some of the webinars on this and you will see what I am talking about.

I would also try to use a .com too if you can.

If I can be of any further help to you, please PM me.

    Best Wishes
    Sidney

PS. When I used the Keywords route, I ended up on page one of Google.

I'd go with the net. I'd rather have the exact domain name that I want and if it's available in net, I'm taking it. I rarely ever use hyphens.

Don't just randomly shove any word or number on the end...if you do that you might as well simply burn your money, find out what exact words people are using to search for stuff and see if you can grab them...

DiamondChoker means exactly the same as DiamondChaplet, but can you guess which gets the most views?

Put yourself in the place of your audience, what words and spelling would they use to get to you?

Thanks for all of your advice. Got one last question that I have thought of. My second best keyword is quite long (5 words) but the .com, .net, and .org are all taken. Do you think adding a word on the end would make it far too long? I found a word that I can stick on the end and it would include my keyword, plus the extra word makes an even longer keyword which gets a good number of searches.

So long as the domain isn't more than 25 characters, you'll be ok.

The domain name you want is 5 letters and you think that is long?

I have known people to type in 30+ letters to get to a specific site before now, so long as it contains all the keywords people would use and preferably how they would type them then you will be fine

Try this, it is a wonderful method of finding what you want
