Video Pros please help me out!

A client sent me a bunch of video in a .MTS format.

Obviously many clients don't even think about format
compatibility when they buy cameras. So, what are
my options for getting this into a lower-res format like
.WMV?

I've tried a few converters that are pretty good with many
formats but had no luck getting the .MTS video into
.avi or .wmv.

Sony Vegas Pro can read that file type and export it to AVI.

Final Cut Pro can definitely read it and export it to MOV.

Under better circumstances, I can prolly help you out as I have both programs. Sadly, I assume that your MTS files are way too big for my internet speed and I have a sizable queue for uploading some stuff which may last for 2 days straight.

Nonetheless, I'm sure a good soul will pass by and convert 'em for you, Loren.

    Hey Loren.

I bought a $900 dollar digital camera a couple of months ago and was...appalled...to the say the least...when it produced some weird ass file -I think it was H262 or something.

It terrified me b/c I thought I just wasted my money. I went on a search to buy software to convert the file but found a much simpler solution.

What I did was imported the file into Windows Movie Maker. It comes with Vista. It played the file like normal, but the trick was to then follow the process of creating a movie. It saved the same file as a WMV and played perfectly after-wards.

That's what I'd try, if I were you.

Open Movie Maker, import your video file, then produce the video. As long as Movie Maker can play that file, you'll be fine.

The drawback is that you'll have to do that over and over. Video cameras are more powerful technology and are "ahead" of computers. With whatever camera he used, he'll have to do that every time...unless you find an easier way.

If you do, let me know!

    Hope that helps.

    Justin
