Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but here goes.

Can somebody direct me to a tutorial on opening a image for a background, then creating a new layer with text and have the background show thru in the text and then delete the background layer, so the body of the text is the background image?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks,

Michael

I don't know if it is allowed to post it here or not ,

but you can write your text on the new layer then select the text and cut

it , you will see the background , then emerge the layers

    Hi Michael,

I think I know what you mean... you want the text to have the background image as it's texture?

Couple of questions... do you want this to occur for all the text you type (i.e. do you want this texture available for multiple text entries) or just for one specific text entry.

There are a number of ways I could show you, please elaborate on the results you hope to achieve.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

Not sure if I got what you'r after: do you want the background image to exist only where the text was? If so, one way is:

    - have you BG and text layers
    - CTRL click over the T in the layers window, this will select the text region
    - CTRL-Shift-I will invert the selection
    - click the name of the bg layer in layers window
    - hit del, hide or delete the text layer

Now everything outside the "text" shape will be blank.

There are other ways as well, but again I'm not sure if this is what you need... hope it helps.

      Little tip...

if you want to do it that way, instead of deleting, mask the text area (skip the invert selection step too). This way is non-destructive and will allow you to change the mask at anytime in future too.

If you want more information about how to do this, let me know.

      Kindest regards,
      Karl.

It was clear enough. And there are plenty of graphics guys here able to help. It's possible the OP doesn't know the name of the technique he wants to use - rendering a google/youtube search futile.

      Kindest regards,
      Karl.

Ok, easiest way - which will allow both (of what I suggested earlier)

Open the file you want to use as the background
EDIT > DEFINE PATTERN (name it)
In a new document (or the same document) type some text
Then, in the layers window add the layer effect (FX) "Pattern overlay" to the text.
Choose the pattern you just made (will probably be the last one in the menu)

This way you can type and edit your text without merging any layers.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.
