Need Help Marketing to Teenage Girls

Hello all,

One of my most-visited sites caters to a popular hobby of teenage girls. It's a site that my daughter and I worked on together. I must say it's turned out very nice, and is reliably getting between 700 and 1000 visits a day.

That having been said, although it has become a resource used by so many, I'm having a devil of a time trying to market something on the site. I've got AdSense on the site, but even with a decent clickthrough rate, it never makes more than $10 or $15 a day.

I've tried some affiliate links, but, even though the ads seem highly targeted towards this market group, nothing is selling... with this much targeted traffic, I certainly thought something would sell.

Can anyone recommend a marketing strategy that targets teenagers? Obviously, considering the market group, I wouldn't tolerate ANYTHING unethical on here. But if someone has any suggestions on how I can improve conversions in this area, I'd be deeply appreciative.

Thanks

Nothing is selling because visitors are teenagers and don't have money so affiliate is off in this case, adsense is low because of the above reason...

But CPA is alway working for that kind of sites, just find right CPA to offer on that site adnd your kid can put 0.5 to 2.0 $ per email in her pocekt easy, I this will not come from yours pocket ;-)...

Yeah, I knew going into building this particular site that they wouldn't be packing around credit cards... I just figured they'd see an ad of something they liked, and say, "Hey Mom... "

I will certainly look into CPA, and would appreciate any deeper insight you could give me on this field.

      -Thanks

Actually teenagers do have money: Teen spending estimated to top $190 billion by 2006

I suspect they don't spend it online, though. Just guessing (based on the teen girls I know) that most of their spending is done in brick-and-mortar businesses. Perhaps you could pursue partnerships or CPA/CPM deals with offline merchants?

What about adding some social media type functionality where they can share their hobby, hook up with friends and so on?

        Mike,

Actually, I have tried adding an affiliate e-book which targets improving skills in the subject area, but haven't had the first sale.

As far as social media, I also have a free Conduit Toolbar offered, which has a chat room in the toolbar, a radio feature, etc... it gets a download every day or two, but is only producing pennies for me per download. Amazing how hard it can be to give away a free thing.

        Thanks for your thoughts.

Have you tried any mobile phone offers? There are tons of ring tones and wall papers etc either direct or via a CPA offer. A company I worked for was looking into this market and I'm pretty sure teenage girls were one of the best demographics to target. It was well over a year ago though so please don't quote me on that.

The main benefit is that most of these services are charged to the phone bill rather than them needing to have a credit card or PayPal account which most don't.

    Cheers,

    Andy

I use CJ and Linkshare for my sites, you can browse categories there and find something that will interest your kid, but not you, she nust browse that with you and if she said that something is "hot" and "cool" then try that. You should try few and find out which converts best. Let say one offer per week.

    Hope this helps

    Andy,

I see your point... the mobile phone thing may be a good angle... my daughter definitely doesn't part with her iPhone.

Plus, like you said, charging it to the phone bill certainly makes it more convenient for them to spend money!

Now if I can keep my daughter from taking advantage of that too much...

Girls buy things that make them feel beautiful. (and...skinny)

Other than that...popular ring tones would be good. Especially if you appeal to thier impulse buying habits.

Just one more point...I noticed that my daughter has more t-shirts than the states population all together. And...still claims she she needs a t-shirt! I can't really figure that one out...I'll keep you posted.

With that type of traffic I believe you should take advantage of CPA offers. Find some that have a chance to win gift cards or the cell phone ringers was a good idea as well.

Just test and find something that works.

      Debra,

With regard to the t-shirts... I actually even have some t-shirts, among other items, with my website logo on them, for sale along the side of the website... no sales after months... sheesh.

Some maybe missunderstud what I tried to say here...

Yes some of them have some money, but they mostly not spend it on the internet.

Let me put it this way.
Would you going to invest time and money in creating product for teenage internet users or you will create product for 20+ year internet user. Yes you will sell something to them, but in the end who will profit more?

I don't see many big internet names making fortune on internet creating products for kids, just use this board as an example.

You could set up sister sites around "buying" topics (prom, etc.) related to your demographic and promote those sites to your visitors.

Find a site that has high traffic volume that caters to the same demographic that you're targeting and use their ads for insight as to what works.

Thanks everyone for the input... I do think that the CPA and cellphone-related goods will be my next area of target.

In fact, I've just purchased Kenster's "Rags to Riches" WSO to learn more about CPA!

This is truly the most rewarding forum on the planet... thanks again for all your help, and I would still appreciate any further ideas.

You may even want to try different ad networks on the site and see if they convert better than adsense -- adbrite for instance may do better...

Ah! This is an interesting topic. So you have a site that attracts loads of teenage girls? Now you need to find a way to monetize your site to make money from teenage girls.
Let's talk about teens a little bit. Teens are adventurous and willing to try different things. Many teens suffer from low self esteem and spend tons on cosmetics and clothing in order to feel accepted by society standards.
So yes, teens do have a fascination with their image, hence they need something good to wear which might bring attention or just look comfortable in front of a mirror.
Have you thought about your own t-shirt line? You said your daughter has a craving for apparel.
Why not create your own t-shirt line or gift line? Best way to do that is to visit Cafepress which allows you to build and brand your own line of apparel and gifts. Try it out and see if you can come up with something?
As a designer, I created my own line of t-shirts in my old company. I created Song Lyric shirts from popular songs by The Beatles and George Thorogood. We made a killing in our company.
Try your own t-shirt line with maybe unique or funny mottos or phrases?
Heck if you get something going, you can build a whole t-shirt business altogether?

I have always thought that this would be a great thing to try.

I do have some programming experience, but have never done anything like "apps"... any suggestions on how to get plugged into this field?

          -Thanks

I also suggest cpa's and pretty much any offers pertaining to cell phones. Instead of just putting adsense on your page, try taking a look at what ads they are actually clicking on. Because then you might be able to simply cut out the middle man.

For example, if the ads mostly clicked are to get "free" ring tones from an affiliate site, why not directly link to the affiliate program for ring tones your self? Odds are you'll make a lot more money.

    Hi Johnnie,

Are you relying solely on Adsense and affiliate links on the site? If so, you're not going to make a decent amount of money with the traffic you're getting. You have to build up a targeted list of subscribers. There are several ways you can do that, but there are certain things you need. You obviously already have a website and know how to put stuff there, but do you have an autoresponder to build a list of subscribers? That's one tool you absolutely must have if you ever hope to make good money on the Internet.

I can give you some guidance if you want to enter into a dialogue about it. I'm always willing to help. Just drop me a line, geek (at) internetmarketinggeek.net and mention this post.

      Ken,

Yes, I do have an e-mail list for this site (didn't at first) which I'm slowly building... will have to see where that goes.

Member forum with a low monthly fee to interact with others with the same interest around the word. You would have to recruit other parents from different time zones to help monitor it to keep it safe from peds, but usually if the kid is interested enough to pay a fee, there will be some parents willing to spend an hour a week for free doing that.
