Bulletproofing My Business / Peace of mind - I need help!

I've really been struggling lately with "ownership/control" of all parts of my business...

For example...my list is one of my most valuable resources...but really it's all in aweber's hands. (I realize I can make backups...and NEED to be doing it)

The reality is that I'm a creative person that does NOT like to live in the details...they really inhibit my ability to create new value/services/products/etc, but I recently almost paid for it dearly...

I'm struggling with this whole "nothing is really in my control"...but yet trying to take 100% responsibility for everything in my life...

I had a strange intuition to check with my dedicated server and make sure it's 100% secure. (In case of a fire, etc.)

So long story short...helpdesk comes back and says there are NO backup services on my machine, nor the 2nd backup drive I ordered....
My motherboard died in JUNE of 2009...and when they used the backup at that point to mount into the new server...they forgot to REHOOK up backups!

I'm thankful I checked on this and am making them fix it right now...
but I'm NOT happy with them. What if I would not have had that intuition to check on everything?...what if my computer fried again?...I would've lost my income. (I do internet marketing for a full time living...and support a wife & 3 kids...)

I'm not here to bash them, so they will remain unnamed...as for the past 2.5 years I've been VERY happy with them.

So...while I realize I can be even MORE proactive...
What measures do some of you take?
Where do you keep your list, your servers, even registration of your domain names? (I have a deal worked out w/ godaddy that if any of my affiliates spam...they'll let me know and I'll just shut down that affiliate...and they'll allow me to continue on running...but I've heard in the past that godaddy was not good to register domain names, etc.)

Also...does anyone just outsource/trust anyone else to do all of this for them? I'm really a hands off kind of guy...I'd rather have the experts running/handling it all...instead of me having some huge server in my basement and trying to rig up remote backups to cousin John across country...
(I just don't have time to try to manage all of that stuff)

I'd love to hear about how you secure all of your internet empire. (or even lack of...as we can learn just as much, or even more from "failure" as we can learn from "success")

I use different passwords for each account, take regular data backups, use different pen names in each of my niches, protect the whois on my domain names, and beyond that I don't think there's much more I can do.

Nothing is going to be 100% secure online, it's just a cost of doing business this way.

      I appreciate your comments.

I believe I'm doing all of this...apart from the different pen names. I guess I was looking more at who are some of the best actual registrar companies that won't leave you hangin' in the middle of your first million dollar launch?
...and not just for domain registration...more important to me at this point as far as the physical dedicated server...I'm aware of the potential problems with being on a shared server...but what about actual companies?

Is anyone willing to share where they host their dedicated server, why you like & trust them, and why they allow you to sleep very good at night, knowing you're not going to wake up to your online financial empire in ruins?

With regards to your server issues, it sounds like you need a server management company. Sure I'm tooting my own horn here, but what you describe is what companies like mine do.

There are many companies that can help you manage a server. Most firms that target small businesses have areas of focus. If you find one that matches your needs, then do your due diligence to assure they are reliable.

Some tips when outsourcing server management:

Have clear business objectives you hope to achieve by outsourcing.

For example, "taking backups of the server" is a technical task not a business objective A business objective may be ... "Assure that my data is safe. I can tolerate loss of X amount of data. Should my data become inaccessible, I will need to regain access to it in Y amount of time."

A good provider will recommend solutions that align with your business objectives.

See if the service provider has official partnerships in place for the technology you are using.

This is important as many IT suppliers, e.g. MicroSoft, Red Hat, MySQL, Oracle, etc, have certification or training requirements before a company can become a partner. Just don't go by logos on a site. I see companies stating they are "partners" when what they really mean is that "we use that technology."

Be very clear what you are purchasing.

The service provider should be able to give you an easy to understand Service Level Agreement (SLA). This SLA defines the services to which you are entitled. If something you need to meet your business objectives is not covered by the SLA, ask for written clarification.

Back to our backup example. You may need to have your data restored to you within 24 hours. If an SLA says 1 week, then that is not a good fit.

Envision situations and ask how they will be handled.

When you are outlining your business objectives, you likely have some situation in mind you want to avoid. Pick your top 2-3 issues and pose them as hypotheticals to the service provider.

Back to backups. Ask, if my drive fails what is the procedure to get the data restore, how long will it take, how much will it costs. A good vendor should have listened to your business objectives and put you into a product that meets your need.

        Watch for product/service cramming.

I find that some vendors take advantage of their client's ignorance. They push them to upgrade into higher tiers of service that they don't need. If you get the upgrade pitch, ask how it will better meet your business goals over the standard packages/services.

Too good to be true applies here as well.

You will find a wide range of pricing for outsourced IT services. As much as 10x for the apparently same service. By digging deeper you can reveal the differences and find the providers that best matches your needs.

        Trusts is key.

You must trust the company providing these services. If they don't give you reasons to trust them, don't use them. Trust is earned over time, so when you first start, you may want to entrust only certain operations to them and then expand their role over time.

I hope I understood what you were after.

Get a data manager in download.com, they're very useful and freeware, I started to use one when I read chia's "Secret affiliate weapon".

You should get one, it will help you.

    Cheers,

      Cheers,
As far as I'm aware, these manage data like passwords, and things like data backups on your local machine. (I have local backup all covered...at least locally...still need a remote backup solution...but don't want to eat all of my bandwidth)

I'm looking for a full backup solution, from a mega-reliable & trusted company for my dedicated server. I used to use GoDaddy, good customer service...a little on the pricey side.

Basically...what companies do some of you use that run 5-6 figure/month companies?
