Please, learn what a TLD is...

I've seen the acronym TLD thrown around the forum, and much of the time it's being used incorrectly. TLD stands for "top level domain" and refers to .com/.net/.org AND EVEN .info/.biz/.tv etc.

I see quite a few people who seem to think that TLD refers only to .com/.net/.org.

Ok that's all, carry on...

    lol ok then...

Well in all fairness the ones that matter most are .com and .org... and to a lesser extent .net

But yes, you're right on the definition

You're technically correct, Mark. However, words have the meaning people give them. If you have ever googled you have done the same thing.

So, while you are 100% correct, I propose a new acronym.

TLD will still refer to .com, .net and .org

But Secondary Top Domain will refer to .biz, .info, and all of the others. So, if you would like to pick up an STD, the Internet is a great place to start.

        LOL

I would agree however with this, .com, .net and .org being the primary TLDs and the rest being secondary.

That would confuse quite a few people. Some might assume that you're referring to a sub-domain.

Let's just keep it simple. TLD means DomainName.extension.
        Again, re-read my post.

@ debra - THANK YOU! It looks like you got the joke. I guess not everyone has heard the term "STD" before.

My post was nothing more than a set up for a punchline. Sorry. As they say, "if you have to explain it, it ain't funny".

Now that you know what an STD really is, re-read the last sentence of my first post in this thread.

        Oh well, I tried.

You might be right that it's something in the water, Michael. I went right where you intended with that, and had a joke ready until I saw others picking up on it.

    Michael,

Lee is RIGHT!!!!!! Are you looking for a fully illustrated set off examples as to what a TLD is? That is IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!! They have TLDs that not only are NEW, but refer to countries that didn't even exist! And don't even get me started on the artificial ones like NEW, INFO, BIZ. And WHY didn't I mentoion TV? Because it is TUVALUs domain!! And WS is Western Samoa. And AS is American Samoas.

I have to say that when I first started I got the impression that TLD just meant .com/.net.org - it was only after I decided to look it up properly due to what looked to me to be inconsistant use that I discovered it's true meaning.

I think there are likely to be a lot of people who think they know simply because other people think they know who learnt from others who... well you get the point.

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with them and I and many others have no problems ranking with .info and other so-called lesser domains.
Have you split test? I keep meaning to but haven't done anything about it yet

That's BULL!!!!! If people don't know a TLD, or slip up, at least in the US, they will use .COM! The next two most popular are net and org. If they FORGOT about the TLD ENTIRELY, the browser may use com. In theory, info would *****NEVER***** be tried! ALSO, .info violates the 2 or 3 byte TLD component standard, which COULD be a problem.

SO, even though they appear to be the same and the back end is pretty transparent, .com is CLEARLY more worthwhile.

Gee, if people used YOUR logic, they would buy one of the cheaper domains. You know, SOME countries have, at times, even given them out for FREE! ALSO, you could set up your OWN TLD. One company even did that and managed to get others to hook them into the name servers.
