Getting started: Tools of the trade

I have a question for all the experienced people out there. There are a lot of ideas on this site. Pretty much all of them require a person to have certain tools at the ready, for example a computer, an internet connection, etc.

If I wanted to build a house -- not matter what kind of house it was -- I would need certain tools to start off. A basic kit if you will. With that basic kit, I could do a lot of different things and finish a lot of very different projects.

So that is my question: Could the more experienced IM's list some of the basic tools of the trade that we should all have at the ready (specific software, hardware, etc)?

For example, every internet marketer needs to have the following to get started:

1.

2.

3.

Etc.

I am not really happy with how I phrased this! I am having trouble asking what I want to ask with less words. But I hope you all understand what I mean. Thanks in advance for your time and effort in replying!

First, I would not know a black or white hat from a top hat! Second, I understand that IM is a vast ocean as you put it... but this whole business has a few things in common. Sure there is Adsense, Clickbank, affiliates, etc.

But all that involves websites, homepages, and the like.

So what I am getting at is, no matter what a person wants to get into regarding the vast ocean of IM, what are the basics a person should always have on hand?

Example, an IM should always have 1. A good SEO tool, 2. keywords software/source, 3. website builder that is comfortable for you, 4. a way to receive monies (like a paypal account or moneybookers or alertpay, etc, 5. a backlinking method, etc. 6. a hosting account -- but get specific (names of software for example).

That's what I mean. No matter what a person wants to do regarding IM, what are the absolute basics a person needs to have on hand?

Thanks for your patience! I really am having a hard time explaining what I am seeing in my head right now.

    This just popped in:

If I have eggs, flour, milk, salt, sugar etc. I can make a lot with that. I can make pancakes, crepes, a cake, tortillas, bread and so on. All of these foods are very different, but all come from the same basic ingredients.

Same here, even if I want to promote clickbank products, build an adsense empire, make money from facebook -- all that stuff requires a person to have some basic stuff laying around the office.

That is sorta what I mean here....

If I want to sell clickbank products:
      1. Clickbank account obviously and paypal account
      2. Keyword research tool: Market Samurai does that
      3. Competition research tool: Market Samurai does that too
      4. Landing page or website: Hosting + domain name + Wordpress blog
      5. Backlinking tool: High PR backlink packages you can find here on WF

Now if you want to create your own ebook:
      1. Merchant account
      2. Word or any writer and PDF creator
      3. Clickbank merchant account if you want to promote through clickbank
      4. You own sales page with high conversion
      5. Some sort of customer support service

do you see what I mean, it's completely different.
Thanks for that post. That is fantastic. I understand your point totally with being vague. But check your list out: two different strategies, but there are a few things in common with each.

For example, Market Samurai could come in handy for many different approaches. Getting a clickbank account and having that available should it be needed. PayPal account (if that is your thing :p), a PDF creator could come in handy for several different projects or approaches -- a sales page (which requires other tools to be able to build -- and not only sales pages but webpages and websites as well), etc.

So your list helps me! If I wanted to build an adsense empire and maybe promote some clickbank products as well, I would have most of what I needed just from the items that are listed in your two lists.

So, in effect, every IM should have Market Samurai (or something like it or something that does what it does) for example. So if the need arises, I have it and don't need to stop my mojo in order to search around for the one tool I need at the moment.

I think somebody should write an ebook on that topic alone: "Tools of the trade."

Thanks again for taking the time to post.

I have used many tools over the years, and I Business Promoter by far has helped me most in SEO. It makes te difference of an air nailing gun or a hammer and nails. It is not cheap, but definitely worth the investment. The Google Keyword Tool is the second best tool. It is free and great for researching keywords for domain names. Make sure you select the "Exact" match type, though, as the results are much more accurate that way. If you are set on spending lots of money, you could also try Market Samurai, and Micro Niche Finder, but I find with a bit of experience, these tools are not neccessary.
