Got Traffic! Got a list! Got a product! Just looking for some direction!

Hello all. New here to the forum and I love it! Thanks to everybody that contributes.
I have a question for the room... I am pretty new to IM although I have had a site up for about 6 years and making money here and there from it for about 4 of those years; I think I have a ton of room to improve.
I created a DIY product way back in the day and decided to try and sell it on the internet not knowing anything about IM. I made a web page, made a cheesy eBook cover and at the time used eBook software to create my product. I put it up on my site and put a PayPal buy now button up and hoped for the best... Well! It started to sell! I posted it on eBay a few times to get my name out there and it actually started to sell. So once a week I would take a look and see if I had sold anything and maybe put up a new testimonial when I got one.

Well now its 5-6 years later and I have 6 products up and I am now ranked #1 for my keywords and get about 1500 unique visits a day. I now am making about 100-200 a week. But I feel that with that traffic and being ranked #1 on Google for several terms in the niche now I should be doing more. I have upgraded my site, started a forum, I have an opt-in on my site and have a pretty good list that I have built over the 6 years. However my conversion rate is VERY low (well I think so) and I am looking to step it up a notch.

I have tried sending offers to my list and have never had 1 sale from that side of things. I figured since I have so much traffic that I could put affiliate ads up and make some money off that but that doesn't seem to work either.

I have branched out to a couple more sites lately and am really getting into IM. I love it and think it's a great thing when you have a good product. I have been pulled into several of the IM products and I did learn from some of them and others I have been embarrassed for the people selling them.

I just would like to hear a few suggestions about how to take my baby to a new level or even branch out to new and better things. What am I missing?

The biggest mistake many people make when they have a list is that they think it their subscribers will simply buy from them.

For them to buy from you, you have to cultivate them first.

Do they see you as an authority on the subject? Do you supply them with up to date info on a regular basis?

Another mistake you may be making is that you may only be contacting them when you want to sell something. This is very wrong! They'll feel exploited and think all you want is their dollars only!

Another question, how good is your sales copy? Was it prepared by a professional?

Also do you have an autoresponder series to market the e-book? These are things you should consider.

Building a list is just half the job....

First let me congratulate you for your success.

You can start selling your Products by joining hands with some good CPA Networks.

OK I haven't tried that one yet. What is involved with that? Do you suggest any specific group or should I just Google CPA networks?

If the link in your signature is to your site, then I have a couple of ideas to throw out. First, what on earth is the link to Teak Patio Furniture doing on this site? It has absolutely nothing to do with your lighting design site, and doesn't belong there. People who are looking for info on stage lighting and such are generally not going to also be looking for teak patio furniture info. I'd remove it now. Same thing with the "Networking Sites" shown, they need to go as they're not in any way connected to your subject and are just distracting. The logos for your recent customers are distracting, too, I'd move them to their own page. Right now they look like affiliate links and they don't seem to make sense.

Another thing is, "Where to Start:" doesn't lead anywhere, I was looking for a link to click to go to another page that would lead me to further information, and there's nothing there, it's like a total dead end. And you have very few posts under "Latest Posts" -- 3 in 2006 and 2 in 2009. You either need to be posting informative articles regularly, at the very minimum once a month, or you need to remove this completely, it keeps people from seeing and clicking on your page links. And when you find the page links the page names are confusing.

Guess what I'm saying is, your site is very visually attractive, but it doesn't draw you in and lead you through the site, or even make you want to look around much. Too much going on, lots of dead ends and things that don't make sense. If you want to put affiliate links, and honestly I wouldn't advise it, then the affiliate products have to be things that are connected to your main topic, stage lighting. I think I'd make a lot of changes to the layout and page titles so people would want to explore. Right now it makes you want to leave.

Hope this doesn't sound harsh, I don't mean it that way, but your site is confusing and it's not easy to find things, and you have lots of information that people would want to see, but it's hidden because of confusing titles and a strange, busy layout. Please take this as meant, as constructive criticism. It wouldn't be hard to fix any of this. It could very easily be turned into a great site.

      AllyW,

I am not offended in the least. Its good to hear these things no matter what point your at. This wasnt the site I was talking about. Thats my day job and the Incorporation that the IM is under. This does give me some food for thought for my design firm though. I had no idea my site for that was bad too.. LOL But thanks for the notes and I will take a closer look at my content.

Just throwing this out there but . . . If you have your buyers segmented away from the rest of your list why not try selling them something related to what they have already bought from you, but much more expensive (and higher quality)?

If people are buying ebooks from you they will probably buy video or something else I would guess.

It would be helpful to know what site you were speaking of to give you some advise. What is the url? It sounds like you have several key things correct, especially having an opt in form and list building to monetization. How often do you mail to the list, and what kind of content are you providing? Your relationship is does not seem that warm with them if they are not buying other offers, especially if they have purchased from you in the past.
